AK Wonderer, that was a wonderful hunt and great pics of a dandy bull. I've always heard this hunt is hard but I put in for it anyway cause it's close to home and I guess I'd like to have a story as good as yours. One of my friends managed to get a very nice sheep in that area a few years back.

Eagle River, Alaska,
I did this hunt last year. Twice. The first time we took bikes in from Hope. It's a long bike ride and at about mile 8, your on the wrong side of the creek. Then it's a long ride to get back across. I'd think the Devil's Pass trail would be better. Try to reserve the cabins according to your hunt along the trail. The second time I went in was off Mystery Creek Rd. We took sleds in to the base of Big Indian and could not get thru the thick alders. We saw lots of tracks on the hillsides, but couldn't get there. This year the Res trail is open to sleds. Big advantage. Good luck and believe others when they say it's one of the hardest caribou hunts ever. Beautiful scenery though.

This year the Res trail is open to sleds. Big advantage.

If there is adequate snow in December, that is. It is not uncommon for the US Forest Service to not open that trail until well into January depending on snow depth. If I recall correctly, someone on here looked up harvest statistics last year and didn't find a single December harvest within the past decade.

There is a reason why the kill numbers around 18 annually with 250 permits offered. (hint)

Most people think "250 permits? That's good odds". After winning, and find out where they have to go and how they have to get there, they think "W T F was I thinking"?

I think somebody asked F&G and they said nobody has every harvested a caribou on a sled on that hunt? Could be wrong about never, but in any case it is not something to count on.

AK Wonderer nice job! and a good write up too. I like the idea with the bikes I'd like to hike the trail this spring and summer to see what its really like.

Our first day in on this hunt we stayed at the Fox Creek Cabin and were reading the log book. Some pour guy from Pennsylvania flew up for this tag and spent three days wondering along the trail before giving up. He definately didn't know what he was getting into.

In talking to F&G, most of the caribou are found on the west side of the Resurrection Trail. F&G in Soldotna will have the most information about the herd.

I drew this tag last year and was unsuccessful in filling my freezer. My buddy and I went in from the Devils Pass 3rd week of August. Hot, clear and beautiful weather the whole time! That was a long "walk" let me tell ya!! lol I was not in the best shape when we went, wont happen next time I get that tag! lost 65lbs since then. My boots newer but worn, killed my feet. The blisters were what did me in. I could barely walk at the end of the day. We spent 4 days hiking around from the Devils Pass cabin to American Creek. Up and over and along ridgelines. We found a very large shed, and tons of tracks but found no live bou. I had an absolute awesome time even though I could barely walk for 3 days after we got back. Took my feet 2 months to fully heal. Still, I will put in for it every year til I get drawn again and again.

Good Luck to everyone who drew this tag this year, I'll give ya any info I can.

A buddy and I did it on bikes a few years back. Here's my write up from the trip. Also, from the main Alaska Hunting page type DC001 in the forum search in the upper right of the screen and you'll find four or so pages of threads about this hunt. It's a great hunt, hope to draw it again.
