I am new to the forum but I figured this is a good spot to get some good information on a hunt. Anybody else draw this tag or hunted this area area before? I know that it can be accessed from the road but was interested to see how other people might get there. I have been doing some research on my own, but some different advice is always worthwhile.

I drew this year. If you do a search you will see that most folks hunt off the Resurrection Tr. I will most likely be doing the same, the plan is to walk about 10 or so miles in on the trail and then start "hiking". This hunt has low success for a very good reason. I wish you luck and will try to keep you posted on what I learn over the summer scouting.

Ah, this is one I was definately hoping for but it appears that I'll be going up to Talkeetna this year. Resurrection Trail seems to be the ticket and I've heard that some folks have utilized bicycles to get in and out a little easier. Anyway I wish you the best of luck and hope you get the opportunity to whack a big bull back there. I think many folks who draw this one tend to opt out but no meat goes into the freezer that way so hunt hard and have fun. Good luck!!!!

Hiking or mountain biking Resurrection Trail is one good option. Some people also head up valleys from the west (like Big Indian Creek) or hike in from the Seward Highway in the Summit Lakes area. All three options are a fair amount of work.

Hunting caribou in the mountains is about as good as it gets. Congrats on your permit.

Pretty straight forward. Plan on getting back in there if you want to be successful. Caribou will be scattered and you should expect to do a lot of glassing looking for small groups or single animals moving around until they start bunching up more later in the season. Lots of trail options - Resurrection from north or south, Devil's Creek, Summit Creek, etc. As Hayduke said - just plan on getting back in there 10 miles or so towards the headwaters of Resurrection Creek and start hunting. Bring a friend along to help pack. The more time you can spend back in there, the better your odds will be.

This is one permit that, if you are successful, you will have earned it. You will be hunting caribou in the same territory that you hunt sheep in many cases. Sometimes the caribou can be found higher up than the sheep. You almost start to wonder if the caribou really know they are caribou.... It is a lot of work, but if you have the desire and the ability to do the work, it is well worth it. Even if you aren't successful, it is awsome country just to spend some time in. A win-win for sure.

I second the above comment on these caribou being like sheep. I watched a small group of them scramble up the side of a mountain, over the top at about 4000' and into the next drainage in the time it took me to say "Oh Crap!"..... or something similar...

Yea, but do check the regs, at least some of that area is drawing permit only....not sure if you can even gen harvest hunt sheep out of resurrection pass...

Sure you can... everything outside of the Round Mountain area (DS150), which is west of Juneau Creek, south of Dike Creek (~Slaughter Creek). Assuming you're there Aug to Sep 20 of course.

Thanks a bunch guys! A lot of good info don't worry though I will definitely try as hard as I can and fill this tag. I know I might already be behind in prep for the hunt but I think a few hikes this summer and maybe have my friend fly me around the location should get me on par. Even if I don't come out of this hunt with a bou I know I will enjoy the scenery of probably my favorite parts of the state!

I've taken my horses up on the Tustumena bench for several draw permit hunts but still waiting to draw this one.

Horses are the way to go if you can make a connection. Good Luck!

A buddy and I did it on bikes a few years back. Here's my write up from the trip. Also, from the main Alaska Hunting page type DC001 in the forum search in the upper right of the screen and you'll find four or so pages of threads about this hunt. It's a great hunt, hope to draw it again.
