I am heading in on Aug. 20th for my first attempt at a caribou. Have a week planned for my first go around up there. Going in from the cooper landing side, I have been up there scouting and feel I have a decent game plan. Anyone else going in around the same time?

Don't expect to see many hunters on your trip, I hunted 7 days and seen 1 other group the whole time. Some will come in at Summit lake and devils pass trails, but are pretty far apart.

I'm heading in there around the same time, though I'm not sure exactly where I'll be. I haven't quite decided where to start. I've been out of town working all summer, so no scouting for me. I'm going off of previous years reports. If you see a couple yahoos running around with bows out there, that's me. On a side note, call Soldotna Fish and Game a day or two before your trip and ask them if they've flown over the area recently. They will tell you when and where they last saw animals. Good luck!

Last time I hunted it, I rode a bike in from Hope. If I were to do it again, I'd head in from Devils Pass trail. Much shorter hike/ride and you are in the area you need to be in. It's a darn tough hunt and could be a lot of fun as long as you are in good shape. Hike up high and wait them out. Don't spend all day walking looking for them. They move too fast and are scattered about. Let them come to you and you will have a better chance of getting a nice bull.

If anybody made it out for the opener, I would love to hear a trip report upon your return. I'm waaay up north for work and have been staring at huge bulls in the Western Arctic herd. Needless to say, I'm getting a little anxious....

I am headed in Thursday. There will be five of us going up with multiple tags. We practiced in May and found a trail to the honey hole. One of us is just packing and looking for a black bear. We will give a report when we return around the 21 or 22nd.

I keep putting in for this tag hopeing to draw it again, the only time I drew it I got deployed to Iraq and never got to hunt it. At that time fish and game would not reissue the tag to deployed military, but I guess now they do. All well someday I hope to draw it again

5 more days and I will be headed in. I had a good oman the other day. I was in the gym up here on the slope working out and thinking about the hunt, I looked out the window and 2 bull caribou ran by, I think it was a sign

I hit Seward the weekend before and got a few, then hit Homer and did not find much. Back at work now, go home Sunday and hitting Whittier for the last shrimp trip (and hopefully some silvers) next weekend.

Back from DC001. Got my caribou - nice cow. Woke up at 0730 at 3,000 feet, walked outside and about 500 feet above our tent we saw it feeding. Stalked it and got it pretty quickly at 89 yards. The wind was perfect! Going back in with my friend tomorrow so he can fill his tag. I have heard of two more being taken in DC001 since the opener. 7 miles of biking + 4 miles of hiking ONE WAY equals the hardest, but most rewarding hunt I have been on.

Good luck everyone! Just thought id share on the conversation and let you know they are all there, well minus one bull! Wife drew a tag and we got lucky on our way out. Her first big game animal and a perfect shot! We were up there for 4 days opening weekend with few sightings and several blackbear. Great hunt overall!

Any one have the number to the Kenai Mountain herd hotline?? Where is the bulk of the herd this time of year? Are they close to the hope road?

I'm looking at heading out this coming weekend for this hunt. I just got back off of a goat hunt and am pretty beat up so any information/tips would be greatly appreciated. Glad to hear people are doing well and coming back with meat.
