compact fishing rods

Hi guys,
I've been hunting up in AK for the last 10 years but have never fished . This year I'd like to bring a rod with me . there should be grayling and pike around according to the area biologist. I was wondering a couple of things. Fist could any of you guys recomend a decnt colapsable or take down rod for this I have the reel allready its an UL sedona that I have on my trout rod here at home (one piece).Second I have never fished for either specie before but am a hardcore fisherman here at home in the salt and for trout in the fresh. Would it be safe to assume that the grayling can be fished just like rainbows with spinners ? What about the pike , is it just noise and flash with them? I would think you would need a 2 rod set up for this trip. Any lures you could advise me on would be a big help because I'm gonna have to order this stuff online before hand . Thinking a spool with 6 or 8 on it abd a spool with 15 or 17 on it should be fine , yes? Thanks

Master Rod Company makes a good telescopic rod that would be perfect for your outing. I have used it myself all over ther world as I can throw it in my luggage and not worry about it. As for Pike, the spinners of all sorts and large loud streamers. A silver vibrax is a good all around color for Pike in size 4 and 5. I have had great success on large Yo-Zuri floating minnows and CD7 Silver/blk Rapalas as well. Good luck and great fishing to you.

Eagle Claw makes a 7' pack rod that comes in 4 pieces. You can buy better pack rods, but the action with this one is really fun... Toss the flimsy plastic tube it comes in and buy a 3' section of abs/pvc with end caps... you can rig for spinner or fly... For grayling I'd get a few number 0 or number 1 spinners for pike you'll want some larger number 3 spinners or top water plugs.. Rubber mice or frogs are great fun with pike... carry a pair of needle nose pliers in your back pocket to unhook the pike..../John

Get a bunch of 3/8 ounce spinners with single hooks. You can order them directly from the Mepps website that way. Treble hooks will be bad on the mouths of the grayling. The 3/8 ounce size will be big enough to attract pike, yet not too big for good sized grayling. Get a reel with 10-12 lb line. Get the XML travel spinning rod from Cabelas. Very high quality pack rods. You would be good to go but expect to break off a few pike. Nothing is perfect. Especially when fishing for two species like this on the same gear. Braided line would be of benefit perhaps. Take an extra spool of line as well. You don't need it till you do.

I have a Diawa Mini-Spin - very compact rod-reel kit that comes in a little box, only thing I don't like about it so far is the reel. The bailer doesn't flip over when I crank the handle so I have to flip it myself. Caught bows on it.

Every time I've hunted on Kodiak and Afognak, where ever there's been a lake or stream nearby, I've caught silvers in November on my little Daiwa mini-caster. Little reel comes with 6-lb test. What a hoot.

Besides the spinners that have been recommended I would make sure you pick up a few weedless lures for pike. Northland's Jaw Buster skirted spoons, Moss Boss, or Johnson Silver Minnows work great for this. A lot of the rubber mouse/frog lures are relatively weedless so stock up on a few of those as well.

Dang, Drifter beat me to it. I picked up a Pocket Fisherman at a Garage Sale a couple years back for $1. Thought it would be fun. Went out and pulled in a bunch of pinks and cohos on it. Kinda entertaining. Though not super functional.

My wife and I each carry the Dawia Mini-Spins on all our summer backpacking trips. Compact and protected and works. Nothing flashy but catch fish just fine.

So you guys saying I made a bad investment??? I picked one up last week on vacation in San Diego...for $24.99. Dang it AK BOATER you got one for a buck? This is why I don't do most of the shopping in the house.

Well as long as I got one, can I interest anyone in a "pocket fisherman" salmon or halibut derby? Kind of like the snoopy rod classic they hold on the Olympic Peninsula every year for hatchery steelhead!

With the pocket fishermen you'll have to learn the trick of casting. It's a little hard with a short stick in your hand. Also you don't feel the fish pull very hard. But it's fun.

Kids were casting great with it! Just about took their mom's eye out! I walked by a toy store, saw it, and I had this strange almost euphoric urge to buy it knowing its worthless as a real fishing equipment...it was a very odd sensation. For the first time I better understood the "trance like" gaze I see from people like my wife in high end shopping outlets.

Had one as a kid that I never used. Prefered my Captain America fiberglass rod with spincast reel. Nothing but the best from Zebco. I believe the base color of our pocket rod & reel was "mustard" ??? Of course, this was an in color back in the early 70s Cheers!

Since most manufacturer's do not make 4 pc spinning rods, I ordered up some 7 or/and 8wt fly blanks and wrapped them up into spinning rods. Makes sense if you travel a lot and know a rod wrapper. I even have a few spey rod blanks wrapped into float rods. Anyways, just another option.
