chines and steering questions with UHMW

Seeing if anyone has advice where to add some chines to get this boat to grab in the corners a little better. I cut the middle two strakes off that were about 8 feet long with the plastic install and lapped the plastic over the two strakes that were the full length of the bottom. Adding a strip of plastic down the center helped a bit but looking for a bit more grab and a little less slide. Thanks, I hope these pics show up.

Let me know where you would think adding plastic strips might help. Or just tell me to live with it either way

Did you add the UHMW yourself? Have you run it with a big load since adding the UHMW? Did you lose tracking after adding the UHMW?
Just need some more info here.

Ya i did it myself.

Yes lost some tracking after thats why im adding some more chines. Other than that all seems fine, needed to shim my nozzle a bit to get the bow lift back.

You could cut strips (1/2" to 3/4": 4" apart 1/2 the thickness of the UHMW) out of the existing UHMW,(use a router) to help loose some weight, and also give you more "bite" in corners, it would still have the protection effect of the plastic, If you keep adding more chines the weight will just go up, you should reverse cut the chines if you keep adding them.

Never thought of routering grooves into it, deffinatley would taper cut the next two chimes if they go on just still thinking about placement for the greatest effect. Weight although is important i have enough power and a big enough jet to handle the 15 more pounds of chines.

Did you add the angle Al to your chine?
Looks like you ended up covering over and losing some of your strakes. It will be interesting to see if you have lost any of your lift.
Probably your only option is going to be to keep adding stakes to the bottom until you get the handling you want. If you could cut the strakes as angles to replicate the lifting stakes you lost or covered, you should theoretically get some of your lift back.
Did you though bolt or screw the UHMW on? Looks like it was a ton of work.

So I did loose lift in my bow when crusing I just threw a shim In my nozzle and solverd that, I did loose profile to my strakes when forming the plastic over the chines.

Gerberman, when you say reverse cut the chines you mean cut from say 1/2inch thick chine to nothing to match the existing strakes?

It was a lot of work........ Hundreds of hours of labor have been put into that boat from the trailer to the new jet/motor combo to the floors plastic wiring you name it, but I almost have it just where I want it now

I would try replacing the two inner chines you removed with uhmw chines in the same location as the original. I have done some where I inlayed flatbar the length of the chine to make sure it doesn't get ripped off. Basically copy the chine you removed in uhmw , say it is 2" wide router a inch and a half wide grove into it and lay some flat bar in it.

If you go the router some reverse strakes into it check out Bratt Jet's website, they use that technique on their uhnm bottoms

Lifting straits are called that because of what they do. They should be shaped like the aluminum ones you cut off. I have played a lot with these on boats and it makes a lot of difference in the shapes used to the results you get. The groves will stop the sliding, and the lifting straits will lift the boat out of the water.
