I’m just gonna leave this hear for now.
Jeff Peterson. Kodiak combos. Why I haven’t done this before is beyond me. Winter goats in alaska. So sweet of fish and game
To offer us a adventure hunt in the slowest months of the year. So nice of old harbor to have a maritime wizard like Jeff who gets charged up watching goats fall off mountains.
We aren’t done yet. So I’m not gonna say anything about the trip. But I’ve got a list of hunts in alaska that are my favorites. Man, this has got to be one of them now.

C'mon Jake. The suspense is killing us. Some of us don't have anything better to do than check traps, fish thru a hole in the ice and write Christmas songs about the tags coming out in a week and a half. At least give us a few pictures to daydream about.

Hooked up with Jeff yesterday for some anniversary goat hunting with my wife. Beautiful weather. Calm seas. Jeff and Byron took us out in the boat and we talked shop and business, clients, the weather, logistics, military. Normal stuff. Saw a nice brown bear, couple hundred deer cruising the beaches, and goats stuck out on all the capes. Some low ones. Wrong tide.
Finally found some 200 yards off the boat, I tried a shot. To much wind. No more. Wait. What’s this a close goat stands up and starts up the hill. Ya ok. I dump her. Big nanny with one and a half teeth. I drag her down to the skiff while Jeff isles around in the bay. Yea us. First day and a easy goat down.
Driving home. A herd of goats is working it’s way down. Jeff knows these goats. Tells us what they’ll do. He’s right. Off loads my wife and I and we hit the beach, goats right above us at 80 yards. Boom. Wife’s goat dies, and falls right to ya beach. Three foot retrieve. Yea us. Easier goat. Who knew.
We load the 10” nanny onto the big boat and we eye ball a line billy right around the corner. No access via land. I ask Jeff if he’s up for sending a goat for a swim. He chuckles. Jeff likes watching stuff get shot I figured out.
Byron and I idle under the goat. Paddle the last bit and ride the swells. I have the ar-10 and 10 rounds. First one is off due to the swells. Then I nail it. A couple times. I’m having fun. The goat does a tumble, a quarter gain, double back, rear entry into the ocean. I gave it a 9. We tie it off to the skiff and drag it back to the big boat.
Yea us. Three goats. Half a day. Never shot a mountain goat

I never touched land to shoot nor to retrieve. Until now.

Awesome! Love the picture of you and your bride on the boat with the trifecta! Maybe some time I could swap a package of goat meat for some moose meat or bear sausage. Or better yet, some lynx if you've never tried lynx. I've only tried goat once and it was a tough old billy and I didn't care for it. But everyone keeps telling me a prime nanny tastes dandy.

Looks like a great trip! Congrats on the goats. Just curious what kind of shape was that old nanny with the 1-1/2 teeth? How was the meat?

Matt Meade and I just got back from hunting goats on the 8th. Flew in on the 6th, flew back to Kodiak late on the 7th with 3 nannies. Lots of snow where we went.

Casper you walked in brush??? That doesn’t sound fun!! Lol I think you hauled gear farther than I hauled three goats! Congrats on your hunt! Weather was crap yesterday, about five new inches of snow on the ground today.

The nanny with no teeth was just as fat as the other nanny. The billy however was as lean as a summer bear. Zero. Zero fat on his body anywhere. Meat seemed fine, no odor. None has been eaten yet.

Yes we were in the brush. Goats were up around 1200 ft. Was a pain trying to get them to slide down the mountain as they kept sinking into the snow after about 10 feet. So it was toss, slide down and toss again until we got to a flat area around 500 ft elevation. Then we processed them and carried them back to camp.

Well ya went and had a good trip looks like. Man that goat on the left in the pic looks like a billy. Best mass I ever seen on a nanny I think.

We thought it was a billy when I shot it. had 8" horns the one on the right was 7" and the one in the rear, Matt's, was just over 10".

Hope you boys saved a few! Headed down in about a week. Nice work!

Fresh snow today. About five more inches. Goats are hard to spot now. But they are still out there. Lots of ice on the mountians. Been cold so waterfalls and springs are all froze up. But it’s Kodiak. It can change overnight.

yep. When we were there it was high 30's in the day and low 30's at night. Not much ice but 2 to 3 feet of snow.

Ya I woulda said 8” billy.

Me too, but just goes to show with goats you don't really know until you walk up to it and lift the leg.

BRWBR, great looking goats and here's to hoping you punch the last tag on a good'un.

I guess that 8" billy must have run hard back in November/December during the rut and just hasn't packed it back on yet. It's hard to beat a young, fat goat (nanny or billy) as far as table fare goes. The old ones still make great burger, sausage, and taco meat though.

Those hides look great, but maybe a little shorter than other February goats I've seen. How long do you think the hair is on them?
