I drew Kodiak permit for this fall(DB205) and started shooting my bow again after quite a while of not shooting. I figure by November 1st I'll be more than confident enough to kill if I get close enough for a shot.

I'm wondering if any of you have killed a brown bear with a bow before. I'd like to hear the stories and see some photos if you have them too.

I've guided brown bear hunts for 16 years and have been real close to quite a few of them, so I'm not a newcomer to big bear hunting. I'm not really looking for comments questioning my intelligence or sanity, but I'm sure that will happen. :)

Thanks if you have stories you'd like to share. I'm getting stoked about this hunt.

I have not shot a brownie with my bow yet (I plan too) but mule deer did last year. He had quite the experience with it. I will let him know you are asking.

Alasken,

I shot a Brown Bear last fall near Juneau with my Bow, I got to within about 18 yds of him when he dropped his head and I had a clear lung shot through about a 1' hole through some limbs. Came to full draw and stuck him, he went crazy and headed up through the brush and it then went silent for about 10 seconds. Then here he came back down the hill and straight towards me ripping and tearing up everything in his path. I quickly drew my 44 mag and started to back up trying to get some distance, the bear crashed through another thick patch of brush and veered to the left and took about 10 steps and fell over about 25 yards in front of me. Whoo I backed off and returned a little latter. When I returned he was stone dead. He measured out at 7' 9" . So for my first ever Brown Bear I guess it's not bad for a ground stalk archery shot one.

good story

good story

Thanks for the story muledeer. I can imagine what was going through your mind. I've seen wounded bears dive downhill for the brush. I would think that if you shot him at 18 yards he didn't know you were there, but to have him come down towards you must have been interesting to say the least.

What kind of bow set up do you have? I'm using my favorite 20 year old Martin compound set at 64 pounds, no sight pins, 30 1/2" 2216 XX75s with a Bear Razorhead 145 grain broadhead. I've been shooting every day out to 35 yards and getting prety confident.

I'll be talking to my buddy in Old Harbor tomorrow to get dates and plans finalized.

I'll be taking my .375 and my buddy there has a .458, so I'll be backed up properly. Come on bear season!

Thanks again muledeer.

He had no idea I was anywhere around but I couldn't figure out if he coming to fight or he was just on his death run.
I shoot a PSE Careara, 29" 70# with a pse 300 Carbon force arrow with a 100 grn 4 blade Muzzy. He was stone dead in 30 seconds but it seemed longer if you know what I mean.

You might recognize this guy since he guides down there also. This is a good friend of mine with his bear north of Talkeetna. A 9 footer taken at 8 yards using a 56# Mathews SQ2 and 100 grain Stinger broadheads. The bear died very quickly.
