Brown bears so far…

As of this afternoon, three brownies have been taken on the peninsula. The big one we all know about, one dinker from the head of Kachemak bay, and one average sized bear from somewhere north in 15c . All boars.

They are going to START getting rubbed soon.............76 degrees and Bright sunshine for the next two weeks. I am sweltering just operating the D-8 in this weather. I think I need to drink more beer for breakfast........roud:

I am amazed that more Brown Bears have not been harvested before noon today.

I think because of the weird winter we had that things are a little different this spring. My buddy has had a bait out since the 15th and finally just last weekend a brownie hit it......but very, VERY lightly, and hasn't been back since. In a lot of places in the low lands there hasn't been much grass coming up yet. I have a feeling that because that bear hit the bait so lightly he just wasn't into it as he hadn't had enough of the usual greens that he needs to get going.

I'm thinking that's gonna change real soon though.....

Friday night I sat in unit 7 and watched a brownie from 730p till 1030p. For most of it he was in a small alder patch and would lay down get up, walk few feet lay down. I have not seen too many brown bears before. He sure looked like a big bear to me. There was a good size black bear a half mile from him. After comparing the two in size I'm certain this bear was very big! I was about 2,000-2,500 feet below him. Could this be a den site? I want to go back, maybe Monday night. Do they generally stay around the same area this time of year?

Although for us down here on the flat lands it seems kinda late for a bear to be hanging around it's den still, but I haven't been up to the mountains for awhile? Is there still snow where you saw it? Was it on a north facing hillside? If so it very well could be it's den. And bears have been known to "hang" around their dens for awhile. If I were you I would sure go back as he/it could very well still be in the area.

Huge old Brown Bears will stay in a Alder patch till 11M then feed and find a place to be out of sight by first light 4:35 AM this time of year. They doing get huge and old by being visible in daylight, buy the mating desire will over power that. They will start mating any day now and that will go well into late June.....even early July. It may also have a kill there that it dragged from nearby. The "BIG" mature boars have long abandoned the den, in-fact most huge boars are in and out of the den all winter. It could also be a large Sow with ten week old cubs, the size of footballs. Many possibilities.

There was patches of snow in the alder patch it stayed in, other than that no snow around. It was on a southeast facing hill. Thanks for the help.

Well, I went back out last night. I did see a brown bear but this one had 2 little cubs with it. Not the same one, the color was much different. There were a couple black bears on the same hill but I’m waiting till 1 June or until they are below high tide line.

Any info on how many were taken over bait vs. spot and stalk? I'd be curious on the breakdown.

I did see a brown bear but this one had 2 little cubs with it. Not the same one, the color was much different. .

For the most part a boar will have a darker, smoother, more uniform looking coat.....not as fluffy looking as a sow. This (the color) changes up in the interior as even the boars can get pretty light on their shoulders, but the hides will still look smoother than a sow.

Glad to see that there has only been one sow killed. I have to wonder if this is only by chance, or if the guys are actually being more choosy? Dave, do you remember what the cap is on females again before they shut it down?
