Just took this out to test loads yesterday 08/13/14.
.300 Ultra Mag 0.340" neck
Remington 700 action
Remington laminated stock from egunparts
Jewel trigger
Pacific Precision lightweight shroud and firing pin
Nightforce standard base
Nightforce high 30mm rings
Nightforce 5.5x22x56mm scope with NP-1RR reticle
Kreiger 1-10" twist barrel, three inches cylindrical then tapers to 1" at muzzle, 29 7/8's inches from face of receiver.
Greg Tannel did all the work. Completely rebuilt & trued action, bushed bolt and firing pin. Receiver front and rear ring cut back about 1/16" to allow for easy loading of magazine.
All dressed up and ready to go.

and

Barrel is chambered to allow a Berger 210gr. VLD loaded to fit the magazine and just touch the rifling. It is sweet.
3150fps average with 91 grains Retumbo at ~59,000 psi and they make one hole groups.
The coils next to the printer run out to the Oehler 35p and the box with the cable running to the comp and on the barrel is the PressureTrace. I use the electrical tape to keep the movement of the cable to a minimum.

I just did the sighting in on the scope and the load build-up at 100 yards. I'll load some shells and back off to 200 yards to see how she does as this is as far as our range goes. This winter I'll be able to stretch it out as far as I am able to see a target as long as I get a good calm day.
It didn't like 89 grains; it liked 90 and 91 just a tad better. Now I have to find a load for FMJ's for wolves.

"Muscle rifles" are wonderful pieces of technology.Very expensive but ultra high performance.

How do you plan to hunt this beast? Do you have a gunbearer handy for trips of more than say 200 yards from your vehicle? Ever tried to shoot this bad boy from a field position? How did it go?

Wonderful rifle...is it really "huntable'? Or doesn't that matter?

I drilled out the swivel holes to form an inverted cone in the wood. I then injected steel-reinforced epoxy into the bottom of the hole and inserted the swivel stud. They won't come out. I have a m1907 National Match Service Rifle sling from Turner Saddlery for it, so yes, I can easily carry it. And I know how to use the sling.
The rifle ready to go with three down and one up the pipe weighs exactly 15 pounds. Since everything out here is either plane, boat and/or snogo, and I don't have a plane, I'll use the boat or snogo (99% likely), to get where I am going, then take a shot.
I have practiced holding the rifle and looking through the scope out the window. Entirely doable. Once it is perfectly dialed in and I have a comprehensive drop chart built up and taped to the stock, I'll get off the bench and start practicing live-fire in field positions.
For the weight it has a surprisingly snappy recoil; you'd think it wouldn't.

I also took out my .338 A-Square, now that is another story when it comes to recoil as it only weighs around nine pounds, throws the same bullet weight, and uses 10 grains more powder.

Edited to add: I am no Carlos Hathcock, but I'm not too bad of a shot (so far), and I don't take risky shots. But with this, I can stretch it out. If I don't hit something, it isn't the machines' fault, it is all mine.

Any plans to try the 230gr Berger? Nice build and hope you can pile up some wolfs with it. I'd imagine the recoil is pretty tame in that rifle.

I've been wanting to try the Berger bullets in my 300 RUM, but the Barnes 200gr LRX bullets and RL25 is an accurate combo in mine.

Good golly molly, that is a serious long range rifle and scope. What does that bad boy weigh?

All that money in that rifle and your shooting off a home made rest! Ha ha ha... Just giving you a hard time cause it looked kinda funny to me!

That is an awesome looking rifle, how long did you research the various components?

I can't imagine the anxiety of waiting for that to come home from the gunsmith!

I was also curious about actually hunting it, can't wait to see pictures of your success!

No I have not. I wanted to have some velocity, and feel the 210's are doing what I want. I am going to look into other bullets once the RL-25 and RL-33 gets here.

With four rounds and the sling ready to go hunting; exactly 15 pounds.

I made that rest back around 1995. :) I paid a guy I was working with $20 to weld the base together. It does elevation and windage. :)

I had a couple reamers made by PPG so I felt any components they made would be high-quality. The trigger? I have two Jewell's and they are the best. I have never heard anyone complain about Nightforce Optics, except for the price. I had wanted to build something like this for years, but wasn't in the position until a few years ago. It took six months waiting on Tannels' list, then his wife gave me a call and four weeks after I mailed off the parts, the rifle came back. I don't discuss the price. :)

Very impressive. I shudder thinking about that long old barrel. I own more rifles with 20" tubes than all my others. Looks like a hoot to play with though. That weight shouldn't be to bad for off hand shooting if the need arises, I shot my gunsmiths 30lb 50BMG from my shoulder, besides blowing the hat off my head it was pretty awesome.

Hey you are right in the area of Kirby Allen, you should see some of his long-range rigs.

You might also try the 215 Berger hybrids I've got a buddy slinging them from a built 300wby and he loves them. The Jewell triggers are the only way to go on a rem action, mine are down around 12-14oz nothing like them at any price range. Hope you get to stretch that beast out soon keep us updated.
