bow type?

Wow, this is kind of a broad question & the answers will be pretty subjective, but here's my $.02.
I hunt with a longbow, & shoot instinctive. I undoubtedly give up a little range to a wheel bow & sights, but I feel the simplicity makes up for it.
I'm good to 30 yds on moose size critters, 35 when I'm shooting alot, 30 on bear when I've been spending the time in practice, & that's good enough for me.
On top of that I just enjoy longbows & 'curves more than wheel bows. Personal preferance. The trad bows with no sights are a little more work & practice time to shoot well, but to me the practice is fun, not work. Why shoot a bow at all if you don't enjoy it right?
As far as brand goes, there are lots of great choices. My longbows are Pronghorn & Howard Hill, I've had Black Widow recurves, & some old Bear recurves, I've shot Martins & Brackenberrys & ????? & enjoyed them all. Lot's of good choices out there.

I have a Matthews LX, these are a bit pricey. If I was to buy a bow starting out I would but a Martin, something like the Jaguar. The matthews are nice but the price will shy you away. I will not tell you that one brand is better than another. I do have a recurve that I use for rabbits and such; just not ready for big game. Kind of like vehicles it is all what you want and what you want to spend.

bboy....it's kinda like buying a car and you're not sure what kind of brand to buy. You go out and drive (or shoot) as many types as you can until you find the one you like. There are so many brands out there to choose from....here is my advice for what it's worth.
I have nothing against traditional recurve or longbow shooters...in fact I would like to give it a try...however I think the beginning shooter will feel more confidant starting out with a mid price range compound bow, shooting a release....just to get started. With just a little practice...you feel confident in no time shooting this set up and you can become proficient with more and more practice. I wouldn't go out and spend $1500 on a set up if it's your first one...you never know and you may not like it and you just spent tons of money for nothing. Spend some time at the pro shops talking with the staff and they should set you up. You don't need to spend that kind of money to shoot a set up that will work FINE for hunting. In the future you will want to upgrade though I'm sure.
Personally....I shoot a Hoyt Ultratec, and have quite a bit of money invested in my equipment...but I've been shooting for a loooong time and started out with other mid range bows before I spent around $700 for a bare bow with nothing on it! There are lots of good brands out there. It seems most...using that word loosely....folks these days are split between Hoyt and Mathews....I just shoot Hoyt becuase I was shooting Hoyt before Mathews became popular.
Above all...you won't be sorry you starting shooting a bow. It's a lot of fun and a lot of great people participate in the sport.
