What is everyone's ideas on the best place to purchase clothing for outdoor activities. looking for the polypropylene and those other synthetic materials. Who's got the best prices? I've noticed sportsmans warehouse don't seem to carry anything except the heavy winter outerware. Any thoughts? Eric

Value Village. Seriously. I have bought numerous polypro tops and bottoms for as low as a buck apeice in great shape. They sell new for $15.00 each. Synthetic wool blend pants and shirts for 5 buck each, etc.

If you want to go old school and get some wool attire then I would head to army navy or GI Joes. I got some great wool pants for $14. With all the synthetics coming out wool is on the back burner but it is still a great fabric.

If you know the sizes that you want, Sierra Trading Post on-line is hard to beat. You can regularly get 40-65% off of retail on top-notch gear. Other than that, REI's twice-yearly clearance sales are good options, as are the seasonal clearance events at other local outlets.

REI has some good stuff at okay prices; that's where I get my thermals. They have some colors that blend in with the outdoors, but they don't carry camo! ) I get my Thor-Lo / Smartwool socks there too.

Army-Navy surplus for wool. I don't wear much wool anymore, but a few years back I bought some wool army slacks there for sheep hunting and they worked for me. Cheap.

I get a lot of my stuff from Cabela's, but you have to watch it; most of their stuff is cotton. Not bad when if you get wet you just walk back to the truck, but cotton clothes on a remote fly-out hunt could get you in real trouble.

Barney's is also great for some items. Sporthill camo pants, etc. A bit pricey, but I don't think Bob is gouging anyone (as has been said elsewhere). He's charging suggested retail on that stuff, and probably adding in his cost for shipping.

at Bishop's attic in Palmer. I have found like new Northface and Columbia gear for 4.00 there. Just picked up a Helly Hanson rain coat for the wife there for 4.00.
EBay, for name brand deals. Outdoors and More but only sale items there.
Wally World sells a line of polypro sweats that make great long underwear or outerwear for around camp. They sell a polyproshort and long sleave t-shirt.
They are carrying white sierra nylon shirts and pants now.

I too hit the second hand stores. You can find some good deals sometimes.

I also like the Mil-Surp store off of Tudor and Minnesota in Anchorage. Run by Russians (gavareesh parusski?). I regularly buy the wool-cotton 2 peice long johns. Great stuff. Use it for work primarily, but handy for hunting and fishing.

Madsens in WA has some very durable gear for loggers. You can order online and reseasonably priced. Bought black wool union underwear from them. Excellent below 10F.

Uh huh....some of us know better. Simply by adding a "Barney's" patch doesn't justify such a high price tag in my opinion.
I like to buy some of my outdoor clothing at REI and through some of the outdoor gear websites, there's way too many to list here.

If you are looking for name brand high quality outdoor gear at rock bottom prices, you have got to check out www.sierratradingpost.com . I have been shopping there for years. Huge selection, columbia, North Face, Patagonia, etc... All kinds of stuff broke up into categories, Hiking boots, cold weather, ski clothes, watersports, etc... I buy alot of clothes from them because it is about half the price of the stores. Check this website out and decide for yourself.

Don't forget, polypropylene sucks when worn next to the skin. You get clammy then freeze when standing still. It does not wick . it is hydrophobic, should be used as the next layer after wicking skin close wear. I use merino wool and superwicking light stuff from the ecws layering system.
Wool is great, went back to it after having problems with other stuff. Now I layer synthetics and wool and I am one very comfortable guy.
The Smokies and Western Catskills can get cold and vertical, this system works for me.
Used to do a great deal of ice climbing and winter mountaineering, I worked for EMS as a college student so I got to try out all the new gear. Synthetics are great as is Gore tex, but, they are not the end-all.

Some good deals at the thrift stores, you betcha! But that's hit/miss.

The sporting goods store on Parks Hiway by Shoprite in Wasilla has a couple of Killer Sales each year. Day after xmas is 50% off all inventory. A great time to load up. They have a bunch of good brands. Regular prices are okay too. Lots of close-out sales items usually.

Might want to check Sports Authority. They seem to have better prices than SW down the way. I'm not too impressed with SW, very spendy. They do have a decent stock of reloading stuff since WallyWorld bailed on those items, after driving the market into the ground for local retailers.

Anybody remember Long Drugs. Back in 1983, when I first subscribed to Anchorage Daily News (via mail), I Knew Alaska was my kinda place because even the drug stores sold Ruger .338 Magnums. I still have that ad.

Lots has changed.

I also like 5th Avenue Outfitters. They have the boots and basic gear in spades. Plus the salespeople know their stuff. If you are going to pay retail, may as well buy from somebody that KNOWS their stuff.

I agree 100 % with B M in that sierra trading post is best place to buy outdoors clothes. They make a line of synthetic fast drying wicking t shirts (long and short sleeved) and underwear too. I used them on a 13 day canoe trip up in the Noatak just this past 2 weeks and they are great. Very low odor and dry super fast. Very comfortable also. And cheap. I also buy alot of stuff from cabelas bargain cave. Found some great deals there and everything I get from cabelas is high quality. But overall, you cant beat sierra trading post. My hunt partner wore a pair of old military wool pants...liked 'em and shot a bigger caribou :lol:- prob not related.

This is a good time of year to search your favorite websites for end of season discounts before they run out of your size. Seems like 2XXL is the best size to be each Fall.

For polypro undergarments I prefer Patagonia. I've been disappointed too many times with the others. I wear polypro almost every day from now until spring and have no patience for poorly fitting or poorly made stuff. Peter Glenn used to be a great source. Mt View Sports still is. For mid- layers there are lots of choices but Sports Authority is a sleeper with a great North Face section and good prices.

If you are going to wear poly-pro then the Pata-gucci stuff is certainly the best. The only issue I have is for that money or likely less you could be wearing quality merino wool gear that is better in every way.
