Everything I've read or heard says that Pixie spoons are the go to lure for salmon & trout. If so, what size & colors are best and what other lures work well, particularly in fresh water.

On the Big Su I prefer green pixies. Everywhere else I use orange. I prefer orange because it resembles salmon roe, my favorite type of bait. I have always held color as a high priority, but I dont even know if fish can see colors. For all I know they are color blind. Maybe snapping my favorite color pixie on a swivel gives me more confidence.

It really depends when and where you are fishing. Pinks, green and orange have worked well for most of the rivers. Here are a couple suggestions to help:
-Go to the local store where you intend to fish and ask them what color this season seems to be selling the most (each year it seems that a different color works)
-Buy two of each color that you think might work! That way you can try each color or switch to the color everyone else is using. The reason I suggest two is that you seem to lose the one that is working!
-Take a look at what everyone else seems to be using. Then run to the store and buy a couple of variations of that color (I avoid this by having almost every color made and I don't lose time running around trying to find the hot color).

I hear what you're saying about the confidence thing. I have boxes full of lures & flies, but usually ues about 10% of them because they're what gives me "that" feeling of success. Thanks for the info

I've never had any luck with pixies on rainbows in the lakes, and I've certainly given them a chance. For rainbows in the lakes I've found 1/4 oz spoons and castmasters to be by far the best producers. In the spoons I like silver, silver red, bronze green, bronze blue, and rainbow painted style, in castmasters, bronze, bronze green and bronze blue. I've had more then one occasion where I've tried various spinners and pixies with no bites, figured the bit was off, put on a castmaster and gotten an immediate hit. I also like to replace the trebles with a large single hook.

The .75 ounce is perfect for the typical short-river cast. When you have to pitch further, go for the full ounce.

Why do they work so well? They are a heavily weighted spoon that drops quickly into the zone of appreciation with the perfect wobble.

The ball-peening adds to the attraction. Orange is my favorite color. I have taken all five species of salmon on it, plus the trouts and the chars. If you direct tie without a mono-loop, be sure and re-tie ocassionaly due to the cinch knot fray and snap. If you favor the forward snap swivel, buy quality and don't cheap out.

An accomplished spinner can use that lure, plus a streamer fly, and be fully loaded to shoot just anything that swims...

I exclusively use Wiggle Warts, Flatfish and Kwikfish for Salmon out here in Bethel on the trib rivers. The ones with the rattle seem to work just a tad bit better than those that don't.

I've used the Mag Warts and Hot Shots down in Idaho but the water is usually clear so we used the Dark colors like Purple, Green. With the silt in the water up here do you have to use the bright Silvers and Golds?

Several years ago a friend worked for a tackle shop that was closing down. He gave me a big box of extra stuff that hadn't sold. In it was a bag full of pixies with white centers. These things sat in my garage for several years before a friend finally broke down out of boredom and tried one. BAM! He started hitting the kings like no one's business! We were on the Little Willow at the time and nothing else we tried had gotten a reaction like he got. I don't know if it was the white centers or just the fish seeing something different. I'm not a big pixie fan except for silvers/pinks and saltwater casting. I've always considered them a "tourist lure" but they do produce, thats a fact.
