Bear Baiting Supplies

I am new to bear baiting and will by trying to set up a stand this spring. Does anyone have any sugguestions on where to get supplies for a bait station? Getting them economicly would be a plus considering the times.

Cheap Plywood?

Time to check stand every few days?

It helps to know the city where you are located.

Barrels - car washes, Palmer Wasilla road there is a place that sells them near the Parks.

Bait - Wallyworld or Fred Myers is usually the cheapest.

Wood - Check the recycling centers. I usually find all my at the bailer in Valdez. Sometimes lumber yards have broken stuff laying around.

Initially it usually takes 7-10 days for my first hits. Then about every 2-3 days depending on how many bears are hitting the barrel.

watch the paper... miscellaneous stuff for drums...

dog food wall mart. or Alaska feed stores for broken bags... or sweet feed.. Sam's also Carry's sweet feed. ( corn oat barley with molasses )

feed store for the 5 gal life stock molasses.. 30-35 bucks
vrs SW 9.99 per gallon.

wholes sale bread outlets for stale or expired bread. to soak in Molasses.

Sam's /costco.. 50 lbs pop corns. again molasses...


health food stores for Anise oil... mix it with olive oil to spread it out.

i wouldn't BUILD a stand... you will find some one in it and it needs to be taken down... get a light clamp on or other you can take out when ready. i like the clamp on.. .then you can take you climbing sticks home..don't forget to LOCK it to the tree.

a cook off works really well. I use strawberry jello cooked in a wok pot bring it to a boil add sugar and marshmellows. This has been very productive for me. I hope this helps.....................

they will start showing up in the paper the next month or so... i like the clamp on lids... but any old drum can have a hole cut in it...


plastic is lighter... but easily stolen by the Bears... and smooched as well..


check alaska feed there again down by post road they used to have food barrles all the time.. but you will pay for them

Inlet Petroleum for barrels. They are down in the port. Don't be scared away by the guard shack. Just stop, get your pass and head over to Inlet Petroleum.

I would also not build a stand. Like Vince I prefer a lock on stand and climbing sticks. I just remove the sticks when I come down and leave. It's actually way faster than a climbing stand.

If you are new at this, be aware that using a tree stand can be very dangerous. Those screw-in tree climbing spikes will move on you, plus you usually try to space them too far apart, and any unevenness in spacing makes it more hazardous. Couple of guys I know really got hurt using these. Climbing sticks are much better, but take time to mount them right. When in the stand, use a harness, and have a harness cutter if you fall and are hanging. Lots of guys don't use a harness, but I know a couple with broken backs that can't tree-stand hunt anymore. When you get ready to shoot, bow or gun, sometimes the adreneline makes you forget you are up in a tree! I've gone to a ladder stand now, I don't have to carry it far and sure is easy to put up safely, and access.

My favorite bear bait is all my old fish fry oil I save all winter....we go to a butcher shop and get scraps for 10 cents a pound, at first, till it starts getting hit, then use the sweet stuff. Popcorn is a cheap favorite with some syrup, molasses etc. That jello-cookoff seems like an idea I'm going to try. Thinking about all this only being 5 week away, and it's still blizzarding outside!

On the KNWR, you are not allowed to nail or drill into the tree. This includes screw-in steps. (It hurts the trees' feelings) If you build a stand, you need to attatch it via "pressure methods" - cargo straps , or similar.

Bears are often called "hair pigs", but what ever you do, DO NOT, I'll repeat that, DO NOT, use hog chow pellets.

It seems that brown bear are insulted by it. Ask me how I know.
