I have a question regarding the rifle proficiency part of the course. Is positional shooting required or is it strictly from a bench? Also, at what distance is the proficiency test performed? Is the test done with open sights or with optics? Lastly, is the test performed with one own's rifle or is it done with one that is provided? I want to make sure adequate practice is done prior to attending the class.

I am an instructor. Postition shooting only, no bench rest. Standing, sitting, kneeling or prone if needed (discourage in most cases due to safety). 25 yards is the outdoor distance. Test is usually done with optics, but some places only have peep sights. Honestly I have seen no real differences in scores between the two. Provided rifle, .22LR, DO NOT bring personal firearms to the class. You must shoot a 4" group. It doesn't have to be anywhere near the center, but just a 4" group. Last week I qualified 14 kids, all under 17, and one adult. Most of them really hadn't shot at all. You get plenty of practice and I bet I could qualify someone that had NEVER shot a rifle before in three practice rounds. It's that easy.
Thanks AK Doug - My youngster will be taking the class for the first time and we have only done bench work with a scoped rifle so I'm glad I asked the question. We have some practice time before the class comes around so your information will help us.

When I took mine, I used a single shot scoped 22, at 25 yards, I put all my bullets all in one hole, from kneeling (my favorite position) They were shocked, cause I think they thought I was an Idiot....(I think they are right)
That "William Tell" story is older than the hills; you're lucky they didn't demand a reshoot at a few different targets.... :lol: Jus' kiddin'...

With large classes, we have students shoot one group in each position (standing, kneeling, prone), then let them shoot the qualifying (fourth) group from whatever position they choose.

Its hard to not to get em all in one hole with a scoped bolt action 22 at 25 yards.
But then, my Grandpa was a marine sniper, and my dad shoots 10" groups at 1000 yards with a 303 british. I think I was taught well
