Just curious if bait was legal to use on the mouth of the willow? Went there last night and got a little curious because for some reason I cant remember seeing bait down there this time last year...or I just may be losing my mind from all this fishing..lol Checked the regs and it said that bait is never allowed in all flowing water in unit 3...which includes the willow...so help me out here where all those people at the willow last night fishin illegally?

I have never seen bait allowed on Willow Creek or any of the Parks Highway streams. I also haven't seen anything from the ADF&G fishing reports that has allowed the use eggs.

Well for one it looks like Willow is in Unit 2.

This is what I found for Unit 2

-In all flowing waters of Unit 2 , only one unbaited, SINGLE-HOOK artificial lure is allowed Sept. 1 - May 31, and only unbaited, artificial lures are allowed June 1- July 13.

Under the Willow Creek Drainage Exceptions it has:
From its mouth upstream to the Parks Highway ( upstream past the parks highway has its own section)

- In the Willow Creek drainage upstream from ADF&G markers 1/2 mile upstream from its mouth, only one unbaited, single-hook, artificial lure is allowed year-round. The bag and possession limits for species other than king salmon, rainbow trout, and Arctic grayling follow general limits for Unit 2.

I have fished bait at the Willow mouth before. Looking at the regulations, it doesn't really say you can't unless you are past the markers 1/2 mile up. Same goes with fishing lures with treble hooks, you can use them after July 13th??

Anybody clarify all this??

no bait

no bait

Actually, the regs do disallow bait. The general rule is that unless a drainage exemption overrules a Unit rule, the Uniot rule is in place. What the Willow exemption says, is that upstream from the mouth, only single hook lures can be used. So, the general rule of unbaited, artificial lures for the lowest 1/2 mile is still in place.
(Now, one could very successfully argue that there's nothing natural about Powerbait or other attractants, but the gist is that artificial baits only use visual stimulation/attraction methods, and no chemical (taste/smell) methods.)

Hey now,

I called the ADF&G number in Anchorage ( 907-267-2218) and asked about this stuff. The person said bait is allowed at the mouth up to the 1/2 mile mark as of July 14 till Sept. 1. Same goes for Sheep up to the Parks Higway.

Call the number above. If they tell you something different please post.
