Any body like knives

Hi, I'm Ron and I'm a knife-a-holic. haha My favorite hunting knives are from a couple local makers. I have one from the late Jim Whitman and the current one I use is the MAK made by Three Dog Knives in Anchorage. Nothing like using a quality knife and I really like it when I know the person who makes it. Kind of makes it special. I just watched the episode of Mark Knapp winning the Forged and Fire Championship. Great job! I also watched one where that guy down by Seward made it to the final round but I think he lost. I got to check out his shop one day, nice guy. I would love to learn the art but will have to start out small. I wish I was up by you Mark amd could be a fly on the wall to learn a few things!

The MAK is a really nice outdoors or EDC blade. It is nice they offer it in a variety of handle material/color and steel. I am happy with mine too.

Did the guy on the way down to Seward, along Kenai Lake there, also open a shop outside of Sterling? I know the guy outside of Sterling was also on FIF, but can't remember if it's the same guy? I think maybe not. It was way too many many years ago when I stopped into the shop on the way down to Seward so can't remember the guys face. On a separate note, does anybody remember who was the guy that would make knives out of chainsaw bars? A few years ago I saved a video of a guy making a knife out of a table saw blade. Still have the video but haven't found the time to try it yet.

I believe it's the same guy, or he used to have both shops. I stopped at the one down by sterling several years ago and they just had some random factory knives. Kind of an outlet feel, but it was the same owner then. His shop on the Seward side has his custom knives and his actual shop. I can't help with your chainsaw bar knife.

Ok then,,,,,, take a look at these, my Granddad had these made, Cir... 1936-37 from what his Journal entry said, and from what I remember him telling me, a Blacksmith Tool & Knife Maker in Red Lodge MT. made these out of old Buggy-Buckboard springs, back in the 90's when I was in Montana, I did some digging around, and found out that Knife Maker in Bozeman, by the name of Desch.... spelling-? may be related to that guy in Red Lodge, anyway, that's my Story and I'm Sticking to it..... :shades: TG

I like knives, anybody else? I'd like to see a new sub-forum on here about knives. Your favorite knives, what's the best knives for a particular purpose? Where to get them, etc.

Count me in for a knife sub-fourm. I've got a whole bunch of them, my current favorite is Bechmade, but I've got multiple other brands in my stash too.

The guy in Sterling, and the guy in Moose pass, on the way to Seward are two different guys. They are cousins. Virgil makes IRBI (I'd rather be independent) knives at his fathers (Irvin) original shop in Moose pass. The cousin was on FIF. Virgil makes great knives and had Steven Tyler stop in and visit him. The cousin, Ken, near as I can remember is not a full time knife maker.

In case you were wondering why I wasn't around, I had a stroke and died on my 61st birthday on May 1st. I was in the hospital for just under a month after I was revived. Just got back a week ago. I go back in for open heart surgery, to repair two heart defects that I was born with as soon as I'm well enough.

Good to have you back Mark. You always have interesting and insightful posts. Good to hear you have beaten back the stroke. Open heart surgery will be no picnic but you should recover fine from it. All the best to you. The forum needs you around for many more years.

Life is precious and can change in an instant. Heart surgery will be a walk in the park after what you have been through. It is scary as hell to have surgery but most open heart surgeries go well. Patients feel like a train ran over them for a few days, then they quickly make progress. I worked cardio thoracic ICU for many years, so if you need to vent- feel free to contact me. Stay safe, and try to remember you will feel vulnerable and not in control for a while. Hang tough!
