most of the mountains have ptarmigan on them, you just need to figure how to get on top of them. I beleive its eklutna mountain, the one that is on the side of mirror lake, you can get up that one pretty easy, and there are ptarmigan up there.

Knik

Knik is pretty shot up, sometimes you might see a rabbit if your lucky, but to see birds, must go back awalys and get on top. To much work.

You can't hunt the Eagle and Symphony Lakes area, or South Fork Valley at all, for that matter. If you go over the south ridge you can hunt the other side once you're in the Ship Creek Drainage.

Just went to Bear Point/Mt. Eklutna out in Peters Creek. Started at Peters Creek trail head (well sort of, I started as far as my 2WD car with summer tires made it up the slick roads:) and took the first trail up to Bear Point. 20 minutes after I topped out on the ridge I was on a group of ptarmigan, took 4, left the 10 or so others I saw for next time. I will definetely come back again, close to Anchorage with a not too difficult climb to get to some birds.
