Analog Guage Data to NMEA 2000

All,

I have a 2005 Mercruiser 5.0L carburated. I talked to Mercury Marnine and they said they have nothing to convert the analog data to NMEA 2000. I did a simple search on google and came up with Actisense EMU-1 which is a converter. Has anyone used this and or have experience coverting Analog to NMEA 2000? I just purchased the Garmin 840XS and would like to use the gauge display function.

Why don't you just run hard wire and forget using the NMEA2000. That would be a lot simpler.

What do you mean hard wire? I just bought the 840XS from Garmin and as far as I know, the only way to use the guage dispaly on the unit is through NMEA 2000. Are there other options vs. the old analog guages that the boat already has?

I made the assumption you could plug the analog data into the Garmin using a cable (hard wired) with out using the NMEA 2000. Have you talked to Garmin and ask them what you can do?

I just went through the same thing with a Yamaha and Lowrance, I had to enable the system.
You may need to change your sensors, for RPM, Oil, Charging.
Save yourself alot of trouble and useless time and call your Garmin Tec,

The idea is cool that you get to keep your analog gauges and add NMEA gauge readout on the Garmin. Its a pretty sweet idea. I was looking into this as well, but I was going the opposite direction. My new engine/ecu uses the J1939 CANbus system so I bought a multi function tach from Livorsi. Fortunately, my ecm also exports analog data with adjustable outputs so I was able to use the ECM oil pressure and such and wire into my old gauges.

For your setup, I think that system is going to work great. You set it up with a laptop or computer and make the NMEA work for you. Its an awesome idea and I found a few cool articles on it. I bet it works like a champ and is probably exactly what you need. Good luck, and do an install thread for us

Also, good luck with Garmin Tech support...lol When I called them looking for info on how to tap into my GPSMAP 545s, they pretty much read me the manual and were very vague on what would work and what wouldn't. Your Garmin does not have analog gauge inputs...so IMO calling them won't do you any good. As you know, you need a NMEA input to get communication.

So far I've located a few Analog to NMEA converters. I think I'm actually going to go with the DMK AEM14. They just show cased it at the Seattle Boat Show and it looks promising. The price for that converter is $450. I'm working with the sales rep now on my engine type and specifics for calibration purposes. I do plan to keep my analog guages for redundancy.

Some of you mentioned calling the Garmin tech support. I did and they were no help. They sent me to Mercury Marine who told me that my engine since it's carburated could not connect to NMEA 2000. After searching a little online and through youtube, I found a few analog converters and have decided on the AEM14 since they are US based.

Glad you decided on one, that one looks pretty cool and should work great. If you are getting help from the sales rep thats a good sign, I would call their tech support and see how their customer service is also. Ask them one of those good technical questions about exactly how it hooks up and see if they can answer your questions

I am using the noland engineering rs11 to convert my analog signal to a NMEA 2000 lowrance lmf400 gauge. It took a bit to get the settings right for the tach but since getting it right I have been very happy

mtl1076, did you install it and adjust the settings yourself? The RS11 is much cheaper than the others I've seen.

I installed and got help from a fairly savy tech friend. It was pretty simple. For the price you pay it is a good product.
