Ammo through Canada

Does anyone know what the law is about transporting ammo through Canada? No guns just ammo. I read the post about guns and I have came through Canada before with Firearms and am familiar their laws. I am wanting to bring up some obsolete military FMJ ammo for Mauser Rifles, a couple of 50 call ammo cans full. I followed a link on the firearms post and basically asked this same questions on their web site but I just thought I would ask if any of you have had any experience with this. I am just extremely gun shy shy shall we say about going to Canada. I had been travailing up for years until they stopped me on day at the border and denied me entry over a 19 year old DUI and a mistimenor firearms charge from 30 years ago. I never lied to them or failed to answer their questions but this time they turned me around with a paper stating I could never return to Canada with out going through their rehabilitation process. Now 2 and a half years later I am once again deemed worthy to cross their border and I want to take up a lode of supply's to my place up their but I just don,t want no more hassles I live in Wyoming and to get turned around at the border is about a 800 mile round trip to go no where.

I have heard the limit is about 6k rds (ball park) I would suggest contacting Canada about this to get a solid answer.

It's pretty close to that. Natural Resources Canada is the website to check out. You have to hunt for it, but it's there. I've brought a LOT of ammo through. You can also bring enough gun powder and reloading supplies to make up to...I think it was like 4k rounds...as well.

Everyone freaks out at the though of carrying firearms stuff through Canada. As long as you don't bring pepper spray, handguns, or assault weapons, it's pretty uneventful.

8 kg (17.63 lbs) of powder (black or smokeless) BP must be in containers 500 g (17.6 oz) or less and smokless powder in containers of 4 kg (8.81 lbs) or less

The amount of powder/primers/ ammo and such is for each person over the age of 18 in the vehicle. The other thing is that after Feb 2105 you will need to aquire a permit from Canada to transport the items through Canada. The good thing is this the permit is 'free of charge' to those that apply.

OK one last question do you need to apply before you get to the border or is it something that you get when you get their, i know that the two times i brought rifles through Canada I had all of the paperwork filled out before i got their to streamline the process but it did not help much they still treated me like a criminal trying to sneak something past them.

Every time I came thou with weapons I had a list of what I had ie barrel length, cal, and s/n # ready at the drive up to show the list. It was a in and out process with the guy and no hassle. I filled out what they asked and was on my way 30m and gone I had a large list. I am not sure why you would be treated any other way if you did the same.

I don't know maybe it is just the Sweet grass border crossing in Montana i notice they treat returning Canadians the same way except for tobacco is what they are looking for. All I know I have just always had bad luck with Canada.

Or drive to Bellingham, WA and take the Alaska State Ferry all the way to Whittier, AK. Depending on the time of year, the boat does not stop in any Canadian ports, so, you remain "in the USA" the whole time. (no customs) You need to make reservations well in advance, and the toll is $$, but, less gasoline (at Canadian prices), less wear & tear on your vehicle and you. Overall, a relaxing way to travel, and great scenery through a part of Alaska that can't be viewed from the road.

I enjoy traveling via the Alaska Ferry System, but it has significant haz-mat restrictions too. I believe you can take more through Canada.

I am really wanting to take the ferry up some time but not bring a vehicle i really want to see the inside passage I used to work on oil tankers going it and out of Vadez but you never get close to land until you get to PWS. How do you get to Anchorage after you get to Whittier? I keep a vehicle parked near the airport in Anchorage for when I fly up.

To avoid a problem a friend of mine experienced check with US Customs/Border Patrol about any restrictions they will have allowing you to re-enter US with ammo.

A friend of mine was up this summer from Idaho picking up a new Kimber along with 50 rounds of handloads I worked up for him. He was fine going through Canada but upon re-entering the US the handloaded ammunition was confiscated because, they said, it was acquired in Canada.

No, it was handloads acquired in Alaska - just brought through Canada. But they threatented him with prosecution unless he "voluntarily" surrendered the handloads. There is an appeal process and several months and hassles later he was able to get the ammo but had to drive a couple of hundred miles to pick it up at their offices.

You may be fine with a Canadian document demonstrating that you brought the ammo into Canada from the US but I'd check the US law/regulations/restrictions before embarking on the trip just to save some potential hassle. Good luck.
