Hey guys,

Just getting into winter and starting to dream up a rifle project for possibly bear hunting and hiking/backpacking with the possibility of a bear to take if I desired.

My idea is to have a 5.25 pound rifle loaded ready to hunt that shoots 220 grain bullets at roughly 2500 fps. And, yes, I despise my shoulder. :D

I think you need to call NULA and place an order. It is only money, and they print more each day. :)

from their site.

Following are the weights of our rifles without scopes:

Ultimate Mountain Rifle 4-3/4 lbs.

Ultimate Plains Rifle 5-1/4 lbs

Ultimate Alaskan Rifle 5-3/4 lbs.

Ultimate African Rifle 7-1/2 lbs.

Using conventional powder charges will present a whole new level of problems. Suggest you look into the Italian method of overcoming the challenges. They are now using a Chemical Charge in multiple stages...like rocket boosting for their new Swat Guns. They now offer a 50 Cal. shoulder fired rifle that exceeds what you describe...measureably.

Think outside the box on this one. It is entirely possible but you gotta get radical in your thinking and designing.

Nope...not at all.

How about a Kimber 84M Montana .338 Federal (5 lb 1oz) mounted with NECG apeture sights (about 3oz)....gets you to your desired weight and very close on your desired ballistics. You could trim the barrel back a bit and turn velocity reduction into a very light scope and mounts and not be too much over your desired weight.

Good apeture sights will get you out to 150 yds or so with little fuss on a bear and will probably be a little more out of the way than a scope on a hiking trip. Probably could do it for under $1500 depending on your smith fees.

Just thinkin'....
Of course you can go full custom and the sky's the limit.... on both performance and price.

Just buy a Blaser! Does it fit what you are looking for at all? Well no... but you would have a BLASER! All animals fall over dead at the mere mention of the name... (so it saves on ammo costs)

Trying to keep this 18" or less barrel or easy handling. Maintain 2500+ fps with 220 or better grain bullet. And 5.25 to 5.5 pounds loaded ready to hunt.

I have all the parts and pieces picked out and with smithing and what not I should be less that $1700 with optics mounted. Just wondering if I was way off base with this idea and I am missing something that I may hate other than shoulder surgery in a few years. :D

Hodgeman,

I thought of Kimber 338 Fed and actually was gonna go that way but the combination of it being discontinued from Kimber and this new platform providing much better ballistics in a short barrel has me leaning another direction.

I built a member here a 35 Whelen on a Remington TI action last year, that would fix your problem. Or you could buy an original Remington 600 carbine in 350 Rem Mag, that would be darn close. Lots of ways to get there just gotta pick your favorite.

Well you should be able to get those ballistics in any .30 cal. I get those in my 300 wsm and carry 220 grains for bear. Of course my tikka rifle is a pound heavier. You could get those ballistics in your 06 also. I like the heavier bullets for bear too. Good luck.

Yeah a standard 22-24" 300 WSM will get those ballstics but in an 18" barrel I don't think she'd quite make it. Plus the fact that is a full pound heavier. We'll see what I can come up with.

Didn't know the .338 was going to be dropped... I better get on the stick and round one up pronto.

I guess you could go with a .338RCM since they're developed for a short barrel...or one of the wildcats. Now I'm curious as to what you're building. Rem Ti action I assume? McM Edge stock?

Don't think Rem TI with McM AND optics would come in anywhere near $1700 ;)

I'll post it up if its a success. If a flop then I'll slither away in shame. :D

I would think you could lighten any old 30-06 to do the job or be close enough.

Yup,, Model 70, 30-06, McM stock with Leupold lightweight Scope in Talleys. 7lbs ready to hunt

Likely so Amigo. This is obviously not a NEED rifle at all. :D Just building for fun and try it out. Not sure I could get a 30-06 to go 2500+ with a 18" barrel. I'm thinking it'd be lacking at few hundred FPS....would that matter in real life at all?? Not at all. ;)

You are being FAR too practical sir!! Thanks for the idea though

The 06 in the photo above will sling my handloads at 2917fps using 180 AB and R-17, not sure about a 18 inch tube as the one on it now is 22.

Long 220

Long 220

220 in a 30 are way too long to optimize powder capacity for many cases.

Thats why the 375 may be the way to go. Get a nice TTSX going 2500 and your in buisness.

Go big or go home. Talk to Jake about his .416.
