That's a good point.

Something like this might better be done by Petition. On the other hand, it might promote guns and gun owership, A GOOD THING, and he could be responding to his constituants.

I'm NOT in favor of choosing a Win Pre 64 Mdl 70.

Maybe, I'll email him to stop wasting time on this, but IF HE DOES, don't go with the Mdl 70.

I don't even own a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 myself. Not only that, but the Winchester factory went out of business a year or two ago. Any current Winchesters are being made in Japan, aren't they?

I think a more relevant choice for a state rifle, that's currently being produced in the USA, and widely used in Alaska would be the Ruger Mini-14.

What? A inaccurate gun with casting and tooling marks passing for metal finish and a fence post reject "wood" stock? I admit I am prejudiced as I own 3 pre-64 M70's but I also own a mini-14.

They are now made in Virginia by FN-USA and are as good now as the pre64s.

There are a couple others I’d rather see . . . lake something made or modified in Alaska but what do I know, 100 Alaskans would pick 95 different rifles so close enough.

I think the Springfield M1903 30-06 would be a great choice. It has a history here dating to WWII and the Scouts and Soldiers who defended the Aleutian Islands.

As much as I love the M70, Alaska, and the idea of a State gun... I gotta say that I (as a taxpayer) am not terribly in favor of paying to get that done.

Never mind that our Legislature goes in circles over pressing issues for our state to be preoccupied with something like this.

First of all,those guys and gals that all you voters keep puting into office needs to stop hideing down in Juneau,so we all could at least drive to them and have much more voice{much of the populace that votes them scumbags in,lives next to the road system,sure the hell don't live in Juneau!!!!}Man,I am self employed,have two kids and a stay at home wife for now,I have to pay the great goverment 20% of what I make or more,with know benefits,no retirement,and no heathcare and no tax refund.{"I lose alot of sleep at night worrying about the choice I made in my career.}And that is were my money goes?Voteing for a cell phone ban and now the states firearm?

I wasn't born a alaskan but sure the hell die as an alaskan,You need to open your eyes and voice a change in the politics,They have waisted enough of my hard earned taxpayer dollers.All these natural resources and no one can put them on market,and yet it cost 155$ to fill up the diesel today,man what a great economy{only the rich get richer screw the working man}

I love this state. We have a bunch of money in our coffers and pump more out of the ground every day. Heck, the state gives it away every fall and does not take a income tax. We can afford this. I am all for a state fire arm especially in this day and age when a big part of America does not see any need for guns, defending them selves, hunting or eating meat that did not come from a store and was killed by some one else. I don't know if Arizona started this state gun business or not, I only hope a bunch of other states follow the example. What if the majority of the 50 states had a state gun, would that send a statement to the politicians? Here in Alaska in 2011 just a short distance from me there is a gun shop across the street from a elementary school, try that in most lower 48 cities. Lets promote the idea of owning guns, it is a symbol of much many of us here believe in. What gun it should be is what we should be discussing. What best represents Alaska? Like it or not Winchester Rifles are a big part of American gun history. The Pre-64 Winchester has been a legend for a long time and it and the 30-06 caliber have seen much use in this state. According to Elmer Keith him and 2 or 3 Alaskan sourdoughs were in on it's design. When I came to Alaska in 1965 the majority of the bolt action rifles I saw were pre-64 Winchesters, 03 Springfield's and the Remington Mod. 721, most all were chambered in 30-06 followed by the .270 Win. I venture to say the pre-64 Mod. 70 Winchester in caliber 30-06 Govt. has over a 60 year history in Alaska. Any other bolt action rifles beat that record? It should have a Lyman receiver sight on it and a old leather military shooting sling...

The longer they talk about state firearms, dogs, license plates, how to fold a flag, etc... the less time they talk about oil taxes and the state budget, things that must get done and, if they don't, will continue to cost more money (to everyone but the legislators who will make more money) because they will need to call a special session to get to them. Put these things on a "as time allows" list for AFTER the other important things are resolved.
