Welcome to the village "dead zone" theory. This is a prime example of why game is managed by the state, not local communities.

Welcome to the village "dead zone" theory. This is a prime example of why game is managed by the state, not local communities.

That's about to change!
This animal was shot illegally and the culprit should be charged and prosecuted the same as any one else who shoots an animal illegally. However, this has been way over played by the state. That animal was so far from the rest of the herd, it had no value to the ability to keep increasing the numbers. Likely there was a REASON the state didn't transplant these Bison around Quinagak so the area isn't exactly prime habitat. Remember, all the animals transplanted spent there lives in fenced enclosures. There's no historic area in their brains to keep them faithful to an area.

The bison was doing well. Perhaps more habitat
Out there than we realize. After seeing the bison up the Chitina river it wouldn't suprise me to see those things anywhere....

It is amazing what bison can adapt to, be they woods or plains bison. In Utah there are a few wild herds, and some of them will be found out in the red sand and slickrock desert at +90F one week and the next week those same animals will be at +10k feet in the treeless alpine at the top of the mountains pushing through 4' of snow to eat...something. Or you'll find them anywhere in between, from sagebrush flats to pinion forests to aspens, firs, you name it. Very cool critters and very adaptable. I took hunting a wild one for me to realize they are more like 1500lbs mountain goats than anything else! Crazy the places they will go like there is nothing to it.
