75-90 synthetic vs 75-140 synthetic

What do you single volvo DPH drive guys use? I been using 75-90 synthetic as long as I can remember, a broker sold me some volvo stuff that is like $183 a change which is like way more expensive than the bucket of 75-90 synthetic stuff from chevron

That Volvo branding costs a fortune, like any other "branding". Personaly I would stick to the Chevron product, they have been making quality lubes for ages and still make one of the very best engine lubes on earth... DELO 400 is top rate for the crank case.

If you feel a need to change the viscosity and Chevron does not offer it maybe consider Amsoil. If 75-90 has been working for years why change viscosity ?

I have a single DPH leg, I thought the manual said to only use the 75-140 in warmer tropical waters?? I use 75-90 synthetic. Isn't this the same type of drive you had on your D4-260? I was told buy a volvo dealer to use 75-90 he even went as far to recommend mercury blue gear lube. I think that was the name?? I think the technical name is API GL-5.
I think those drives only hold just under 6 quarts, I have bought the Volvo brand for $15 a quart.

I have a D4 225 with a DPH that has been using 75-90 synthetic, I send the drive out to indemand every year or when I find water in the oil, the drive has been thru hell. It has been thru a bent shaft, bent cap, corriosion and still going with 2305 hrs on it.

I won't dispute the quality of the Volvo oil for I have no experience with, and in all likelyhood it is high quality as other Volvo products are. However, if your outdrive "has been through Hell" and maintanined accordingly as it seems to be by your statements, his recommendation of using the 75-140 is not going to prevent water intrusion, a bent shaft, bent cap or corrosion . The guy who sold you the oil is a broker, brokers are out to make $$.

I offer these words from the perspective of a professional mechanic and to point out some area of common sense, and mean no offense. If your experience with the Chevron product you have been using for years I see no reason to alter the practice.

I have been using the 75 /90 weight from Amsoil and it works great. I am going to try the 90/ 140 weight from Citgo. Dave Willey in Valdez uses on his boat the Dan Orion and really likes it. It cost me $258 for 15 gallons so it is cheaper than Amsoil at $180 and Volvo at $300 for 5 gallons.
