I have shot all three versions and the longer versions are easier on the wrist,that said I sure wouldn't want a steady diet of any of them. As with anything else they can be mastered but they aren't very much fun to shoot after about 10 rounds.They are out with a snubby now 2 3/4 inch in 460 and 500 better have real good hearing protection and strong wrists.Good shooting Ronnie.

I have a 4" model and I don't think its bad to shoot at all about half again what a 44 recoils. I can shoot 5 rounds into a 55 gallon barrel double action as fast as I can shoot 6 from my 44 with about the same size of group "or patterns as my partner calls my handgun groups". Horse

I own a 8 3/8, 6 1/2 (PC Model) and a 4 in. If i shot them blindfolded I could not tell one from the other as far as recoil goes. My 329 44 mag outkicked them all (I sold it). The Ruger SRH in 454 casull also kicked more than any of the 500 S&W's. Thats why it was sold as well. I have never shot a 460 but most of the people who I know whose opinions I trust claim the recoil on it is noticably less than the 500's.

They just hit the market and test results are just now filtering in .
I am going to have to disagree about them ( 500 mag ) not being fun after 10 rounds !!! Your just warming up at 30 plus rounds of varied weights .
I also have the 460 XVR with the 14" barrel .The recoil I can not comment on since the revolver is mounted on a Versa pod and I do not shoot it free hand !!!!

I have a 4" barrelled S & W 500 and to shoot it with factory ammo is nothing like what you would imagine. Not nearly the recoil I would have expected. However, with the Buffalo Bore the recoil feels like it is doubled. I cant shoot the gun with one hand with the Buffalo Bore. When deciding about which barrel length, I would be more concerned with weight than recoil. I am a big man at 6'6" 330 lb. But I have noticed the gun slides down a bit on my belt holter (desanti) due to the weight of the gun. If you couple that with a nice smooth sythetic shirt, the problem doubles. I find that I slide it around further to the back of my hip to alleviate this a little bit. If you are carrying this gun for bear protection, you likely wont shoot the gun that much so recoil is less of a factor. Also, the ammo is extremely expensive. But you will be carrying the gun alot so the weight is perhaps the more important factor. It is an awesome gun. Period. Get the one that you can carry the most comfortably.

I Didnt Shoot It With One Hand. No Desire To Do So. I Shot It With Both Hands And After About 5 Shots, I Was Feeling It Pretty Good. This Is The 430 Grain (+/- 10 Gr) That Goes Like 1975 Fps For A Ft Lbs Of Around 2550. This Stuff Is Brutal And The Most Powerful Bb Makes I Think. And To Be Honest, It Was Quite Cold That Day I Shot It. I Know That Made A Difference As Well. In An Emergency, The Gun Could Be Shot With One Hand And High Pow Ammo, But I Can Not Say For Sure If There Would Be A Second Shot Or Not. One Thing I Have Noticed With This Gun Is The Shock To The Parasympathetic Nervous System. If I Shoot This Gun First, Then Shoot Say, My Glock 40 Or S & W 329 Pf (32 Special) I Notice It Is Hard To Hold These Lighter Guns On Target. Hands Shaking A Little From The S & W 500. So Shoot It Last If You Are Going To Be Shooting Multiple Guns. For Bear Protection, I Look At It As Rifle Power, That Fits On Your Hip. Perfect For What It Was Intended To Do. Not The Right Gun For Target Shooting.

Ripface, went out and shot the 500 S&W today to do a little last minute prep for a trip up into the Noatak Preserve next week. Shot the Buffalo Bore I had mentioned earlier with one hand. It is not something I would suggest. I got one word for you...B R U T A L !!! The gun has a specific purpose for me though. And If I have to use it on a bear for some reason, I hope the adrenaline improves my grip. This thing scared the hell out of me today. Bet it would be even more scary from the business end. If you are looking for some hardcore protection, this is your gun. I saw the 2 3/4 inch Model 500 on S&W webpage the other day. The survival kit they call it. Comes in a pelican case with emergency firestarter,signal mirror, etc... That pretty much tells the use for this pistol in my opinion. A last resort do or die gun. Not a sunday shooter. But like I mentioned, the factory stuff is a pleasure to shoot. You could shoot it all day. But the Buffalo Bore point of impact is way off so I had to adjust my sights. Problem with that is that I can hardly get it sighted in before my parasympathetic nervous system is in overload and I am shaking like a leaf. Atleast it comes with nice fully adjustable sights. You want to make some noise and have some piece of mind in the bush? Get one.

Interesting. I shoot my 4" 500 one-handed and don't find it to be uncomfortable at all. I don't notice much difference between my 500 and my old 44 mag. I'm sure Mr. Bruin would notice a difference, though.

Like I said, it is all in the ammo. With factory stuff, the gun is a joy to shoot. As heavy as it is, it should be.

I always keep an eye on Freddies prices. I met a guy who paid under $100 for a 17HMR. They had a Leupold range finder for just over $100 one time, I passed and regretted it ever since. Today I watched them pull a ton of rifle accessories off the shelf and stick it in 3 carts. That usually means a sale is coming up.

Ripface, I got my Buffalo Bore from Cabelas. There are 3 different loads for the 500 S & W. The most powerful is the one I have spoke of. It is a 430 grain super hard cast bullet going at 1975 fps and delivers like 2,550 ft lbs. The other two loads are a little lower I think. Any would be capable of stopping a truck. One other brand I would suggest for you to look at is Garret Cartridges. Very high quality Hi power ammo. The Buffalo Bore comes in a nice plastic box also. Pricey, but very good stuff.

Not sure where you are located but another place to get premo 500 mag loaded rounds is from Bill and Leona at www.ballisticsupply.net .They do nothing but 500 mag ammo ,350 Grain XTP through 700 Grain Hardcast and are very nice people to deal with .
