Do any of you guys use this round on the big bears? How do they perform? What loads etc.

Writer Chuck Hawks has kind of taken to this round like Jack Occonor did to the 270. Are they that good?

it seems like there's a renewed interest in that caliber. All this short mag stuff and Remington must have thought it better (cheaper?) to dust off that and the 6.5mm RM instead of develop new SAUMs in those calibers. Makes sense to me!

Patrick (big cheese at Kifaru.net) loves it to. If you go there, he's got a series of articles about "rambling rifles", and kinda goes through a progression from .308 Win. to .350 RM and finally decides his favorite cartridge for his rifle is the .358 Win. Loves 'em all though. Good reason too, they are all very efficient and effective. He also mentions having hunted boar with Craig Boddington in California where that was the Colonel's choice too. Hope I didn't spoil the ending of someone's bedtime story!

Though not as popular as the longer 35Whelen, the 350 Remington Magnum has a proven track record on big game. It is highly efficient and can duplicate the performance of the Whelen w/ a shorter barrel due to less needed powder. Phil Shoemaker has written that the largest bear ever taken from his camp was w/ the 350RM. Ed Stevenson is a big fan of this round as well and his opinion is highly regarded in big bear circles.

I use it (currently have two) and am a big fan of this cartridge. The best mathematical formula that I know of to compare the proven down range performance of the 350RM and the Whelen to other more well known cartridges is "Taylor-KO". The 350RM/35Whelen shooting a 250 grain bullet 2500fps has a Taylor value of 31 which is the same as the 338 Winchester Magnum shooting a 250 grain bullet at 2650fps. The 338WM shoots flatter and has a higher S.D. but inside 200yds this matters little and the 350RM can do it in a short action w/ an 18" - 20" barrel. In addition to a smaller and lighter rifle, it uses less powder and therefore has tolerable recoil.

My latest Ruger 350RM came out of the box under 7-pounds and has a mag box and chambered long enough to load most 250gr bullets to max velocities. In addition, the mag box holds 4 down.

Thanks for your input Gary. I had a couple of guns sitting on the rack in a local gun shop for sale on comission. Both sold the same week so I had a little fun money burning a hole in my pocket. I was sitting on the fence concerning getting a 77 all weather in 350 mag. You just pushed me over the fense as I just ordered one.

Then I went searching for dies and brass, totally struck out on brass, and the dies I found were overpriced. I'm waiting on a package from Midsouth with brass, dies and some 225 gr Sierras. I'll used either partitions or triple shocks for hunting, but want to dial it in on cheaper ammo.

Keep in mind that the Ruger has a 1-12" twist, not 1-16" like Remington.

If you want to shoot the small bullets, I'd get the Remington. You'll be better served shooting 225-250grain bullets out of the faster twist Ruger. The proper 250grain bullet at approx 2400 - 2500fps would be a good bigger bear load. If you want light bullets, try a longer bullet than the Remington 200 SP-CL.

My 350 Rem mag will be my big critter gun. It will be the largest bottle neck cartridge that I have ever owned. I plan to shoot only 250 grain slugs. What loads do you suggest?

Well after my second session at the range, I really like my Ruger 350 rem mag. First session with factory 200 gr was disapointing, 3-4" 3 shot groups at 100 yds. The trigger is still really heavy (haven't had time to fix it) but I at least had 10 fired cases. Yesterday my package from Midsouth arrived with Redding dies, 100 cases, and a couple boxes of 225 gr Sierras, so it would take alot to keep me from putting lead down range today. Fired cases were sized in the Redding dies, new brass ran through as well to clean up the dings. Cases primed with CCI BR primers (close at hand, I usually use Fed 210's)

I was a bit miffed to find my can of Varget almost empty, but there was enough to load 12 rounds. I used 57, 58 and 59 gr of Varget under the 225 Sierras, and adjusted the seating dies for a COL of 2.875", and a trio of speer 250's over 57 gr Varget in new brass.

First group of 57 gr went into 5/8", 58 gr went 1 1/4" (mighta pulled one with the stiff trigger) and 59 gr also printed 5/8". The 250 speers went about 2", but I'm thinking that has to do with the new brass. The cases definately fireform, and I think that's why the factory fodder shoots so poorly.

Anytime you print sub MOA with your first load, is a good day! Hopefully the 225 partitions and triple shocks shoot as well.

I to got tired of waiting so I bought a couple of boxes of the 200 grain factory stuff ($34/box). I think I'll make the 24 mile round trip to Brownells Inc and pick up a Timmney trigger before going to the range. I also picked up a box of 250 grain Partitions and a can of 748. I will play with that combination once I get the factory crap shot up!

I paid $27 for a box of factory fodder, and found another shop that wanted $32, and another that wanted $37. If it doesn't shoot in your gun, don't despair. It seems that at least in my gun, the brass should be fireformed first. The Redding dies are great, and I can't wait to fix the trigger and dial in some loads.

.350 fans have another choice in rifles as Big Green just released the Model 7 CDL. The Remington Custom shop has been offering the M7 KS in 350 for many years but sales were fairly slow due to the price. I purchased my CDL for $605 from Buds Gunshop online. I haven't put any rounds thru it yet, I'm waiting on the Leupold scope. I am putting the 2.5-8 w/ the Boone and Crockett reticle on this little 350. I will use it this fall on my sheep hunts. My hunting partner carries a 338 RUM wizbang boomer, and he really gets fired up over me carrying little carbines on a sheep hunt. I don't shoot very far to begin with, so it should be perfect. I have shot several critters with my Remington 600 in .350 with the 250 grain pills and have had excellent results. I even killed an 1800 pound Angus bull with it back in Iowa about 10 years ago. We have 2200 acres in Southeastern Iowa and we had a bull that went AWOL and decided he was gonna do things his way. This went on for a few years and he turned into a critter to be concerned about during the Whitetail and Turkey seasons. Well he eventually tore hell outta one of our clients trucks and Dad decided he needed to go away. I was back home on leave and the little 350 went with me hoping to go on my first DG hunt. The bull took an initial 220 grain /06 round to the point of his left shoulder with very little effect and then I broke his neck with a 250 grain round.

Two thumbs up from this carbine carrying fool...

I like my .376 Steyr better tho, killed my first ram with one, but decided against lugging the Prohunter up the mountain ever again.

I just bought a box of 225 grain Kodiak bullets for my new 350 M-77MKII all weather.
Any thoughts on the kodiak bullets?

I still have some 250 grain speers, 225 grain Seirra BTs and some 275 grain Barnes from my old 358 Norma Mag.
The 275s may be a bit long to try in the stubby 350 case.
I gotta find a few partitions to see how good they shoot before I go hog wold and buy a bunch.

I am still waiting for the Riflebasix aftermarket trigger to show up.

It looks like I may have to go buy some more powder too. (next trip to Anchorage) I have a bunch of IMR 4350 and some 3031. It looks like you guys are using various stuff for your pet loads.

Anyone tried RL-15 in the 350 mag ?

On the 270 Win for Grizzly......I have to say something, with the right bullet and perfect shot it would be adequate for interior grizzly.....but the cal. as much as I used it over the years, would not be my choice in Alaska. Great everthing else cal......but not the big bears! I draw the line at 30-06 for them!

The mid burners should perform good in the 350 mag.........I prefer IMR 4320. But RL 15, 4064 should be excellent also.........

RL 15 should work fine. So far I've just used Varget, when your first handload is 5/8", it's a good sign. RL15 and Varget are almost grain for grain replacements of eachother, though it seems Varget has been just a touch more accurate in every gun I've used it in compared to RL15.

I've heard good things about the Kodiaks, but haven't tried them. I do plan to try the Barned 225 triple shock. To my thinking, a tought 225 @ 2700 from the 350 is about as good as it gets.

The Kodiaks are a great bullet. I have a long list of critters taken with them. I have not used them in the 350 but they are idealy suited for calibers in that moderate velocity range. 225's in general worked better for me in the 350 and I'm sure the Kodiaks will be good. I have used them and in fact would be the bullet of choice for the 35 Whelen, whch is a balistic twin to the 350. And my loads for both of these 35's uses RL-15. I use a lot of this powder. I'm sure Varget is also very good, as Pauls said, it's close to the burn of RL-15. This powder is also a good short barrel propellant.

You'll like the Kodiak bonded bullets. I use them in all calibers where velocity is 2800 fps or less. They expand rather quickly when driven to higher velocities. I'm trying to get Alaska Bullet Works to make them in .423" diameter for the 404.
