I just picked up a Ruger MKII All Weather in 300 SAUM and have been hearing mixed reports about the SAUM. What do you guys think. I do not reload so there is limited options. It could be re-actioned to 300 WSM. Let me have it...

This 300 SAUM is treated like a red headed step child for sure, but the lack of popularity in unjustified. This is a very good round with a more accurate base than the 300 WSM, with true bench rest roots.

What could you hope to gain with a WSM over a SAUM? I don't understand the term "re-action for the WSM" They are the same action length, technically. I think Ruger no longer catalogues the SAUM so you should hang on to it. If ammo is a problem for you just stock up when you find it. If you don't shoot more than 100 rds a year, there's plenty ammo around.

I'm curious, what reports do you hear/read about the SAUM?

The SAUM cartridges will wither on the vine within the next 10 years. Remington missed the boat on this one. Of course that would be nothing new for Remington. I have 2 boxes of the 180 grain Nosler Partition load if you know of a way to get it too you.

When I said re-action, I meant re-chamber. Ooops. The bad things I keep hearing is that the 300 SAUM will soon wither away and become obsolete making ammo hard to find. But I guess your right, I should stockpile when I can.

Ok, sounds good. These you can have at no cost as I don't think there is a single person out here in the YK Delta that shoots this cartridge.

Yes it is dying or dead but is still a good round. It will be hard to find anything to feed it before long. Remington will make ammo for some years but the premium sruff will fade away. You should consider selling it and buy what you want. Did you just buy this Ruger? What configuration is it in? Barrel length, sights, etc? I might be interested.

Ruger MKII 300 SAUM

It is the All Weather Ruger MKII (no sights) and I actually traded a single place snowmachine trailer for it. It is brand new and unfired. I don't think I am going to get rid of it though unless something great crosses my path. I was planning on using it to replace my MKII (wood/blue) 338 Win Mag. I plan on going back to the lower 48 within the next few years and the 338 is too much for down there.

Sounds like a good deal. I don't mind the SAUM, I like underdogs. It will do anything the WSM will do, it's probably 50 fps behind it. It should be a nice portable package, a good rifle for you. I do think it will die away after a while. It has found some acceptance in the AR-10 and so called LE configurations to replace the 308 Win and does a noble job there. I have a Remington LTR 20 " in the caliber and it will duplicate the 30-06 velocities with 180 grain bullets in a 24" barrel. Not too bad. Of course it does bark a little.

I think the 338 has a place in the lower 48 especially out west in elk country. I think that is one of the best elk calibers going. Since they split up and shortened the elk seasons where I like to hunt, a guy can't be too picky about his shots. I can take any shot any where with a 338 and good bullets. I have put some good bulls down with that one. But as a general duty rifle it is a bit much.

Unfortunately I will be going to Whitetail Country and the ol' 338 would be slight overkill. I still haven't shot the RSAUM yet and am looking forward to it. Thanks for your help and encouragement.....

I was'nt sure if this post was still active, but seeing your thread I wanted to respond based on my experience with this caliber. When the .300 SAUM first appeared on the market, it was not properly marketed (in my opinion) by Remington Arms. It should of received a better rap than what it received.

As far as ammunition goes, I wouldnt be concerned about availability. There are many manufactures still chambering the round, especially firearms that designed for "semi-automatic" capability, and Remington's custom shop still offers many options for the caliber.

As far handloading goes, there is a "ton" of information on load recommendations and data. Some of which, greatly exceeds the reloading hand books that is now available on load data .com. You might want to browse this website for future use and reference. Loading a Nosler 200 grain bullet @ 2950fps, creating 3820 foot lbs of energy, presents a different picture of this cartridge's capabilities. Anyways, I have two rifles chambered in the .300SAUM, and can testify without reservation of it's highly accurate characteristics and power.

I too just purchased a 300 SAUM. For about a year now I been hunting caribou with the 300 WSM with good success, problem is the rifle belongs to my son. He doesn't mind me borrowing his rifle but I figured that I should get one for myself. So a few days ago I started searching various sites and found a good price on a 300 SAUM. I don't mind that it is 50 fps behind a WSM, as long as the rifle and cartridge does what it is intended to do which is to put meat in my freezer I will be happy with it. As for ammo, I will be buying factory ammo whenever I make it into Anchorage, few boxes here and there will probably do the job for me. Just hope that one of my daughters doesn't decide she likes the rifle more than I do.

As you can see by my handle I love the SAUM. I bought a model 7 when they first came out on the market. The accuracy of this rifle is better than I could ask for ½” three shot group at 100 yards. As for ammo I reload all my own ammo myself. As I see it pop up I buy what I can when I can. This way you can load what you need when you need it. If it is true that they will stop selling loaded ammo I would suggest that you might want to start reloading. As for brass if anyone has some that they a willing to get rid of please send me a PM and we could talk.
