300 HP DIESEL outboard lust

Thought this was cool and I'd pass it on.

I stumbled across these guys [FONT=arial,helvetica,sans-serif]www.megoutboard.com[/FONT] who are in the pre-production stage of a line of turbo diesel outboards in the 175, 225 and 300HP ranges.

Their 3.0L (300hp) weighs 723lbs and their 2.3L tested out at on a 22 foot CC Glassmaster @ 39.6mph WOT burning 6 GPH, which works out to 6.6 MPG.

I emailed them volunteering to be a motor tester and this is what they sent back:

Thank you for your interest in Maritime Engineering Group's Vision Turbo Diesel Outboard. The outboards that we will be producing will be in the initial range of 115hp-230hp and will meet all emission standards. When we get closer to our production date pricing will be available. The weight of our engines will be similar to other 4 stroke outboards and for durability our engine will also have closed cooling.

Boat in the 1st video looks like its about 6' wide??? guess it should go good, even a electric motor would make a banana go fast!

They have been in this 'preproduction' phase for a couple of years now. I bet if you place an order for a certian localy manufactured aluminum boat and a pair of these motors, they will be delivered about the same time.

Bahahaha! That's funny.... but I would bet you the motors would get done first....:lol:

I ran across these guys a few years back, seems they are still trying to get their act together. Impressive numbers and grandiose ideas but lack investment backing. Sure would be a boost to the recreational marine industry if they can get their products to market.
Comparing Diesel HP to Gas is like apples to oranges, you need to look at torque, and diesels have way more torque to hp ratio then Gas. So a 200hp gas can be replace by say an 115hp diesel and still maintain the same performance characteristics but see a significant increase in fuel economy. Also, the added benefit of using a far less volatile and potentially explosive fuel.
If they can get their act together and satisfy EPA requirements these outboards should be flying off the shelves.
