30-06 & Nosler 180 gr Partition

I've gotten pretty good velocity with 180 partitions ~2750-2800 using R22 or H4831, with a drop tube. I recall the charges being around 60 grains. No issues with extraction or excessive primer flattening or whatnot. I've not mic'd the bases yet. You'll have trouble getting the powder in without a drop tube.

I had no problem getting 62 grains of R22 or H4381 in the case.

Here are the results from my latest round of testing, and thank you to the guys that offered advised on loads as I am very appreciative of the assistance.

Rifle used is a 1970’s vintage Remington 700 BDL 30-06 with 22” Barrel.
Winchester cases and WLR primers were used in each load in conjunction with the Nosler Partition 180 grain bullet with COL being set at 3.34”. All cases were full length sized, primer holes de-burred, and crimped with a Lee factory crimp die.

The information provided here is for velocity only and was not fired for accuracy. Please note that only one round per load was fired over the chronograph so accuracy potential and velocity spread have yet to be determined.

Ambient temperature at the time of testing was between 24 and 31 degrees F.

No load show here exceeds published load data to my knowledge, however there is always the chance that I have made a typographical error, substitution or omission that could create a dangerous situation in your firearm. That said, all the usual warnings and cautions apply.

You may note that the loads are sorted by velocity and that there are three loads that exceed my personal bench mark of 2700 fps for the 30-06, however due to the low temperatures at the time of testing, I will perform my due diligence and re-test for excessive pressures once the temperatures come up above 60 F.

It is also interesting to note that the 18 loads fired on my last day of testing all grouped into 3” at 100 yards even though 6 different types of powder were used! This is made even more impressive by the fact that I had no intention of shooting a group, but rather used the target to help insure that I would not inadvertently shoot the chronograph and little care was given to accurate shot placement or trigger control. I was quite surprised to say the least, when I went down range to retrieve the target and stand!

What are your barrel lengths. The ones with 22" tubes generally have to be pushed a bit harder. The 4350's are great with 180s, but get just as good accuracy and better velocity from IMR4831. I havent gotten around to trying RL19 yet, but imagine that would also do well.

The load I have been using the last couple of years is 180 Part, 56.5 IMR4831, Win Brass, and any LR primer. This shoots about 1-1 1/4" @ 2725 in a 24" M70. The same load with 55 grains of H4350 gives me 2650 for a comparison.

Have you compared your IMR4831 to H4831 (rumors say it burns a tad slower), and to H4831SC?

In my expierience H4831 is slower than IMR4831. I have not tired the SC version yet. I have done very little loading with H4831 in the -06, and dont have any stand out loads with it. Talking w/ others more knowledgable than me, it really comes into its element with 200 + grain bullets.

Well guys....

For the last few years, I've left my 30/06 loading to Federal. I've had excellent results with Federal's 180 Partition High Energy load. My old Ruger77 w/ 20" barrel shoots +/- 1" for 3 shot groups and clocked an average of 2795 fps. I can't beat that with my handloads. I'm building a new 30/06 from a m70 SS Featherweight and will probably try some handloads when it's completed and see what works. Till then, I'll probably stick to that High Energy load, and leave the handloading for my 330 Dakota.

My 56.0-180 grain load is 2700 FPS +- depending on your barrel length I have shot this load for years in my Rem 760 and now in my Accumark 30-06.

Advise try for accuracy first then vel.......the good old 30-06 at 180gr 2700 fps is plenty for the cartridge.

If you need more the 300 WSM or 300 Win mag will get you 3000 FPS.

Bush man, out of curiousity what are you getting for velocity and accuracy on those two loads? Also how long of a barrel?

2700 fps with 180 NP
IMR 4350 @ 56.0 has been standard load for years in my 30/06 here in Alaska hunting moose.
I use Fed Nickle Brass and Fed 210M primers.
Don’t try to hot rod the 30-06 just get good accuracy and meet the normal velocity levels.
55.0 to 57.0 will serve you well !
57.0 with Sierra GK 165gr is a good load also.

Alaska Bush Hunter? Do you do anything special in using the Nickle Brass?

I used some Nickle brass (WW .357) years ago and it flaked off and messed up my dies so stopped using it completely for any thing. I think some times it'd be nice to have some "shine" on my hunting brass in wet weather.

That was probably cheap nickle brass.
I only use WW or Fed Prem nickle brass for my reloads. I ordered some nickle one year from midway of a different brand yes it flaked and it went into the trash.
I have some WW Nickle in 357 mag never had a problem.

I am working up a 30-06 load using Winchester brass and Nosler 180 grain partition bullets. I am unable to reach the published velocity using the Nosler loading data and consistently fall 100 to 200 fps short depending on the powder. Now when I compare the load data from Hornady and Speer I see that they both consistently list max loads that are 1 to 2 grains more than the Nosler data. What gives? Have any of you guys noted the same lack of velocity performance loading the Nosler partitions?
When I work up loads for Hornady or Speer bullets, my velocity usually comes pretty close to the published velocity but still falls a little short, but certainly not 200 fps short.

Ok, I'll add my 2cents worth, as I've been packin an 06 for about 60yrs now, used to handload back-in the day, but in 93-94 my Hunting Partner and I were at the Rocky Mtn. Elk foundation Show in Reno, NV. and he had some family connections with an Ammo-Vender there at the show, long story short.... we bought 1-One 50-rd Case of Winchester .30-06 180gr Black-Talon Rifle Ammo, and 1-One 50-rd Case of Federal HE .30-06 180gr with 25-Boxes of NP & TBBC Bullets ea...... so as you can see, why I stopped re-loading, anyway, I've still got 10-boxes the Black-Talon, and 12 or 14 of the Federal HE, in 180gr & some 150gr as well...... that Black-Talon Ammo Shoots Lights-OUT from my Rem Mtn. Rifle......

My GF's 30-06 did well with the Black Talon ammo as well, and I'm still carrying 13 rounds of it on my hip as I type. Was good stuff. Too bad it became unobtainable.

In my Remington 700 30-06 using 165gr Hornady SST with 54.0 grs of Ramshot Big Game I get 2750 fps. Powder burns very clean, brass barely gets dirty. Need to try some 180gr bullets to see what I can get.

I was lucky enough to pick up about 200 rounds on Black Talon about 6 months ago. A local guy bought an old Ruger 30-06 and it came with 200 rounds of Talon and 200 rounds of Silver Tips. He sold them to me and I gave the Silver Tips to my nephew and the Talons to my son and his old Tikka M695 loves them.
