Curious about any updates on the haul rd.
I was supposed to go last year. $6.84 a gallon for diesel it was much cheaper to go to the store for meat. I am going to try again this year. What happened to all the haul road reports that were posted each season? No more caribou or hunters?
I'm planning another trip up next year, fall of 2023. Always interested in reading of the news.
Dave, to me the biggest reason people don't go is the "transporter" (and I use the term loosely) who brings in over 100+ people and stacks the rivers with tents and two-legged scent spreaders.... It used to be a fun and fantastic hunt, but that crew has single-handedly ruined it--every self-respecting caribou says "no thanks!"When I first started going up the hunt was pretty easy. Usually had your bou the first day and back home. It was easy to see several hundred a day. Then the migration pattern seemed to change, and I think people quit going up.
Mark, roger that.. I'm talking more of the river(s) that shall not be named (rather than the road itself), and the transporter(s) that are stacking tents and people on the banks of said rivers. It used to be a delightful, relaxing hunt--grayling, arctic char, mountain views, herds of 'bou--but recently it's been a nightmare (to the point I don't bother going anymore!).Hi Griz, when we were up there, there were lots of independent people up there. Lots of trucks and we saw quite a few people chasing caribou. I saw the transporters taking people off of the road. Not sure when you were there though.
Mark if you were up there last year how was the hunting? I remember large herd going thru when I used to go. I'd go even if it was a lot of singles around. I bow hunt alone so it is a nice trip to do.Hi Griz, when we were up there, there were lots of independent people up there. Lots of trucks and we saw quite a few people chasing caribou. I know, things have changed for us too, places we used to go and be alone now are clogged with people. We are always looking for a new unpopulated place. We have to go farther, earlier and less conspicuously than ever.Mark, roger that.. The locals hunt big herds in Sept up by Happy Valley. We were up there earlier, and saw lots of people chasing singles, higher up. By Sept. we were in moose camp, way south of there.Mark if you were up there last year how was the hunting? I remember large herd going thru when I used to go.
