First Alaskan big game animal! Did a fly in / float out hunt on the Ivishak River! Tough hunting, I only saw 9 bou and it took till day 5 to get this guy.
Pictures of the bulls my dad and I shot last week. We were hunting a portion of the Nigu River drainage, about a 1.5 hr flight WNW of Bettles in the Brooks Range. A day after I shot mine, a storm blew through and Bettles set a record low August temperature of 15 degrees (we were probably down to single digits in the field).
My 9 year old son took this monster bodied bull on a fly in hunt in unit 13, using my drawing tag. He made a very good frontal shot at 60 yards, then Dad had him take another broadside shot that was probably not necessary as he went down within 40 feet of first hit. Largest bodied caribou I have cut up in a long time. Really quiet enjoyable trip. Proof positive you don't have to shoot magnum rifles. .223 64 gr. soft point.
My bride harvested this beautiful Nelchina bull with her custom AR I built for her for Mother's Day and hand loads. Fattest bou I've ever processed and very good tasting. I'm a very proud husband.
Hunted hard for 3 days in the CCUA off the Denali hwy connected Sept 5. 325 wsm @ 100 yards w 200 gr Accubond. Hard angling away shot. Took out 5 ribs on one side and recovered the bullet at the base of the neck.
