2 stroke vs. 4 stroke augers

I have a 2 stroke and I put 50:1 in for the first tank, then straight premium fuel and enough oil to color it. Runs awesome. No issues with power.
However, if your fuel is too oily your auger will sputter and choke out. An issue you wouldn't have with a 4 stroke. Just food for thought. Haven't owned a 4 stroke but I've never heard of one having more power than another.

I own a 2 stroke auger but what I'm wondering is the cutting power of the the 4 stroke auger. When I ice fish I like to drill a lot of holes and if it takes me twice as long to do it this with a 4 stroke then I wouldn't be interested in it. Any side by side comparisons by anybody?

try the jiffy propane.
Propane? what do you do when its really cold out? A propane weed burner or BBQ sputter in the cold because the fuel freezes. I'm curious. 4 cycle engines have a lot more torque that 2-strokes but they don't rap out like a 2-stroke and 4 cycles don't seem to start as easy in the cold and they're heavier

Never tried the 4 strokes, but I am not sure that there would be much advantage. My auger uses so little fuel already, I have had it for 3 years and only used about 1 gallon of fuel.

I'd have to say the same thing.
I'm not looking at them so much for fuel savings it's more about exhaust. I cut a lot of holes inside and outside of my shack and the blue smoke haze left inside drives me crazy. It gives me a headache and the front of my ice fishing parka has oil stains all over it.
That being said, I'm okay with my 2 stroke but if the 4 stroke was better I would make the switch. So far no one has said anything that would make me fork over the dough for a new 4 stroke.

I have used both and prefer the 2 strokes. The four strokes are better for drilling holes inside of an ice house, but if you want to punch a lot of holes, stick with the 2 stroke. They are typically lighter, get up to speed faster, and have less starting problems. I live in Northern Minnesota and my friends and I ice fish for 4 months out of the year. I have been able to try every brand out there. The only one I have not tried is the propane one. Out of all the ones I have tried, I like the strikemaster lazer ones the best. I am really hard on gear, and it has held up well to my abuse. I lost the air filter about 8 years ago and never got a new one. Had snow and ice in the air intake countless times and it ran fine no matter what. I would have to guess out of about 3000 holes, I only had one problem, which was the throttle cable getting froze and stuck. I have never had a trip where it didn't start or broke down. I haven't done anything to it except change the plug every couple years, and sharpen the blades.
A buddy had one of those Jiffy 4 strokes with a 10 inch auger. It was like lugging around a lawnmower. I would have to say that I out drilled him 4 holes to 1 with my 8 inch Strikemaster. If your just going to sit in one spot, a four stroke is fine. If your gonna pop a lot of holes and look for fish, use the two stroke.

Heck I live in fairbanks alaska and this past month its been in the 80's which is kinda wierd since ive been up here 23 years and never had 80 degree weather in may so i say if you come up to alaska next winter it may not even have ice on our lakes lol.Oh and a 2 stroke is much better for what you are doing.A 4 stroke is ok if you only are doing a few holes but if you want several then stick with the 2 stroke.

I would imagine the fourstroke to be decent but not necessary. Fuel consumption is not an issue as a gallon of fuel will provide dozens of holes for 3 icefisherman for an entire week with a two stroke (3-4ft. of ice). I generally run a very bumpy 30 miles of trail to get to my ice house and oil leaking out a fourstroke would be a shty situation. When packing up the freight sleds, sometimes an auger can end up in a not so friendly position, it then does a 30 mile bumpy ride back to the road. Two strokes don't care how yah store em. One gallon of premium fuel, stabilizer, and a touch of oil............at two stroke will start on the coldest of days. Reality:
four strokes not needed, two strokes much better.
