nice going again. i don't know where all them mallards went to but they sure haven't showed up around Kenai. it's been so bad over here that hardly anyone is hunting. It got down to 20 where i live in sterling but was a clear day and nothing much in the way of birds working the ponds as I had figured. I only stayed for 1 hr then went home to watch the baseball playoffs. No ducks were on the entire flats area but I did see some guys shoot into a flock that flew right over them but didn't get any out of that bunch.

Most of the smaller bodies of water have frozen up as well as the shallows of big water. Figured we see birds in here with the first real onset of winter, at least some on big water. Saw zero flights and we ended up only seeing a pair of Mallards, of which the Drake was taken. It was a pretty clear day but I have to say this season really has me baffled as to where the birds are????

i don't know if as many ducks migrate back to alaska as the year(s) prior or what. I haven't ever read a study on duck counts for October. Probably would have to have 3 or 4 planes covering various areas of the state. I mainly would be interested in knowing the duck count from Anchorage and north of Anc. and east and west of it.
We can read that during the severe drought years in Canada and the lower pacific flyway that the birds had to bypass much habitat and went straight to the Boreial forest area and northward. Maybe this year and last because of increased rain fall in CAlif and elsewhere that I'm thinking many of the ducks just didn't make it up to AK this year. Last year and in 2004 the calif. breeding ducks population increased by 6 percent and moved above 7 % of the 30 yr long -term average. 650,000 + ducks were in calif. at the end of August. Many stayed all year, many are in canada, OR and WA of course. We are the end of the line for them ducks. It seems the hunting up your way and above anc. is much better than the Kenai peninsula but then you have more hunters moving the ducks around too. That alone could make a big difference

Limited out on Mallards on Fri, should have yesterday but thought I would out smart the birds and set up further back in the slough since I shot them up on Fri but they went back to the same hole so I moved and ended up with 6.
Quit hunting geese about the beginning of Oct and been bear hunting since but seems to be alot of Mallards down here. I saw probably 300 on Fri and probably half that many on Sat.
