Decades ago Mr. Cooper in Paulden opined that should a revolver fail, it was more likely to be a catastrophic failure whereas a semi-auto 1911-style platform might fail (marginally) more often but was easier for the operator to resolve. Recognizing the shortcomings (if you need correct even a minor glitch in a bear situation, you're on the losing end of the encounter), nevertheless, I've always preferred a semi-auto and my current all around wilderness pistol is a Glock 10mm. Right or wrong, it's never failed in my practice shooting even after a few sessions designed to try to foul it up ( shooting rapidly, often, uncleaned, etc).
That being said, I've only had one unplanned / unwanted encounter with a bear with hostile intentions and the decider in that case was a .375 with a tip off scope, conveniently tipped off. Just a tad less than 40 years ago. Today? A hostile bear encounter would probably see a cardiac or cerebral infarction occur before any sort of defensive weaponry became a factor.

Some dude on the Kenai hosed a sow brown bear that attacked him yesterday. He killed it with his .44 Magnum. He's alive, the bear is DRT.

If I didn't have two - .45's and two - .44's....... I might be interested. But with +P loads in the .45 I feel safe at least with the black bears. Some days in the yard I think I need a street sweeper. View attachment 2784947
And here you go tromping through the woods for bears when you could shoot them from your yard! Lol

I like the idea of the 10mm for outdoors, 15+ capacity is hard to argue with. I have a great deal of experience with the 3rd and 4th generation Glock 20. My experience is the g20 pistol will not reliably cycle hot outdoor loads like buffalo bore and underwood ammo. I think most people that carry these pistols haven't gone to the range to actually make sure that box of "bear loads" the guy at sportsman's gave him will reliably cycle. I've been through every spring replacement, barrel etc etc. The pistol just won't reliably feed from what is seen. So I stick with wheel guns.
I switched to a tungsten guide rod and 20 pound recoil spring for the Buffalo Bore 220 grain hardcast loads.

Do you feel the tungsten rod any any effect on muzzle flip or recoil?
I would not waste my money on the Tungsten Guide Rod .
If you plan to use Heavy hunting loads in G20 a NDZ stainless Rod and 20 to 22 pound spring will work perfect. I use 22 Pound in my G20.
