Spent the day up there and was surprised by the quality of the fishing and of the fish. There were very, very few other people up there and nobody else was fishing. An exceptionally nice day.
I tried calling ADF&G and never heard back, but I figure some of you might know. I've got two questions. The first is this: last winter F&G announced that people could keep small graylings on the lower Chena, but it's not in the regulations - it still say C&R only on flowing waters in the...
It's that time of year - before the interior graylings are dispersed for the summer you're bound to run into other anglers, which inevitably means seeing a lot of unsportsmanlike behavior. But, as crappy as some of it is, I don't think I've ever seen such unsportsmanlike fishing as what's in...
I don't know if you all are familiar with steepandcheap.com, but it's a discount sale website associated with backcountry.com. They do one item at a time (or used to - they've got a new "gear cache" page) at huge discounts. backcountry.com started selling fly fishing gear a year or so ago and...
There's a new online magazine called "Dun" for women who fly fish, here: http://dunthemagazine.com/. The first issue seems mostly oriented towards the conspicuous consumption part of the sport (travel to exotic locations, buy expensive gear) but the pictures are great and somewhere down deep...
Anybody who tells you the fish are gone from the upper Chena is probably trying to hog all the good fishing for himself. They're still north of Angel Creek and even still taking dries. Water's darned cold, though.
A friend had a couple of future Yukon Quest rockstars take off on her in the Whites:

The evacuation watch has been lifted for Two Rivers up to mile 27, but there's now an evacuation watch from mile 27 up to mile 39. We went up to the west fork yesterday and the smoke to the east was really thick. The fire has jumped the south fork, According to what we heard at a community...
The Stuart Creek 2 fire remains uncomfortably close to the road, and the rec area is still closed. There's tape across the entrance to many of the pullouts, and they even wrapped tape around some of the outhouses. Might be a weekend to visit the Chatanika instead.
We evacuated twice - once...
No, it's really cleared up a lot in the last two days - the water is really nice and the water level is good, but the fish are podding up in a few locations. Usually by now there's fish everywhere, but it could be another week. Look for deep holes on outside bends, spots under trees, etc. But...
There's now fish all the way up the river, but fishing is spotty and the fish are staying pretty deep. There's not a lot of activity on the surface so just look for a deep hole and run a heavily-weighted nymph through it, see what happens.
I expect an awful lot of us here love being 50 miles from the nearest town and the only thing between us and whatever is a lot flimsier than that. The point is that people here pick berries every single year without being mauled. The Yukon government has a pretty good brochure on their website...
