Dude, U dont need anything fancy. I got the 3 small buts on a 6' spin rod w 10 pound test line. (Luckily the king was on the surf rod- it has 30 lb test). Fish on a CALM high tide, the hr b4 and after. Rough surf keeps fish from near shore. Herring, troll or pieces of big herring wk fine. Grab your farthest casting rod and use it. You only need to be out 80 or so ft but if u can do better, great. My bigger hooks on surf rod are actually keeping fish off that rod. 3 way swivel set up with whatever wt your rod will handle. My spin rod has only about a 1 oz wt on it. My surf can throw up to 4 oz but I usually throw 2-3 oz on it. You'll get Irish lords, halibut, flounder, and later in the yr, sharks -3-4 ft long. (steel leaders needed) I also use float of some kind to keep the bait just off bottom on most days. I think it also gives a visual for fish. Any beach between Homer and Clam Gulch would probly wk. I fish south of Ninilchik. Also I fish off Hmer spit next to Lands End. Good luck.
I live in Anchorage and I have a few questions about surf fishing? What do you use? Where do you fish from? Do you fish High tide? Low tide? I would like to surf fish some day, don't want to spend that much money on a charter, would rather catch halibut from the shore. thanks,
