  • Hey Catchfish. Thanks for offering up the info. Is there anywhere to rent a boat in Homer? Does most of the hunting take place across Katchemak bay from town? How far do you have to run to get into the Harlequin and Goldeneye?

Renting a boat in the Winter will be difficult. I wouldn’t even try to hunt down there until October and most of the outfits are closed. You can get a water taxi to take you over and drop you off. You would have a better shot at using a small inflatable inside the bays but you would want a motor as well. You can get into harlies and goldeneye in a 15-20 min ride but all the hunting is across from the spit. There can be good goldeneye and merganser hunting on rivers that time of the year.

I’ve already talked to mako about taking us to and from and renting kayaks. We will be flying though so I’m not sure how practical those cabins would be with all the gear you would need. IE sleeping bags, water tanks, firewood etc.
Hey, I was wondering if I could pick your brain on Windy Creek up on the Denali Highway. I just read your post from a few years ago and it said you did it on bikes. How was it? I'm hauling my bike trailer and my friend doesn't have a great bike, so hopefully it's not too bad. Do you have any maps or anything of your starting point and/or route? I'm finding confusion on where it is versus Valdez Creek rd. Do you think there will be some small groups of caribou up there around mid August? Thank you!

Yes so if you get an Alaska gazetteer atlas the road is marked on it. There is a pretty big parking lot off the road but you can’t see it from the Denali. If you go in from Cantwell it will be past Valdez creek road. I can try and look at some mileage going in but if I remember correctly we were 7 miles in where we shot the caribou and they were definitely up high on the peaks. The road is rough but it’s still a road so the biking is not bad. We didn’t have a trailer I hope yours is nice saw a guy using a kid trailer and it looked terrible. We saw several small groups of people back there so don’t expect to be by yourself but it was not crowded at all I only saw groups really on the road never up high.
