  • Posting pictures with the new version of vBulletin

Recently we installed a new version of the vBulletin software that runs these forums. Along with a number of improvements came a headache: problems posting pictures.

For months, it had been easy to take links from Photobucket or other sources and drop images into the forum pages. It's no longer so easy, as was explained in another thread here, as explained by Man1c M0g, an experienced vBulletin guy who has been helping us with a number of forum issues:

There is a very good reason for this issue. If you take a look at the IMG URL you have posted you'll notice that it isn't actually a link to an image, but a link to a script that calls up an image. This is an important distinction, as recently some gits discovered ways to hack software that automatically retrieves the image and displays it. So, for very good reasons of security, VB now just shows a URL when you display a link to sites like google images, photobucket, etc, that use image scripts instead of direct hosting.

If you want an image to show directly in a forum you'll have to host it properly and then give the real URL to the IMG tag (or download it to your machine and reupload it properly to VB as an attachment). Hope this explanation helps!
So much for the problem. Now, what is the solution?

There are three ways I have found to add pictures. If anyone else has found other solutions, please chime in.
    1. Attach a file. This produces a thumbnail image with a link to a larger image. This is not the preferred mechanism because we will eventually have to delete some of these to conserve disk space. To attach a file, use the "manage attachments" button below the message entry screen while you are posting a message.
    2. Link to a photo on a website you control. This isn't exactly the preferred alternative, either, but it works if you have a website or some space to upload pictures. For example, the picture below is from the home page of the Outdoors Alaska store. The link is
      http://www.outdoorsdirectory.com/store/images/home-canoeist.jpg
    3. Link from Picasaweb and (probably) other providers: I use Google's Picasa because it allows me to easily manage my images and then upload them to albums which I can share with family and friends. This is the best alternative I have seen so far. Here's what I do:
    • Upload my image to Picasaweb using the software
    • click the "Link to this photo" link shown with my picture in the online web album
    • select the size that I want (400 px in the image below)
    • take a PORTION of the "HTML to embed in website"
      <a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/djurliv/BozemanSacagawea/photo#5083717916032178466"><img src="http://lh6.google.com/djurliv/Roz-gotjGSI/AAAAAAAAApk/zplc12k2RnY/s400/P1020278.JPG" /></a>
    • I use the "image source" portion (img src="xxxxxxxxx", where xxxxxx represents the source, in this case:
    • I click the insert image button and copy that URL into the window. Here's the button:

As I said earlier, if you have found OTHER ways of adding photos, please let us all know.

I'm still not following what the problem is. This picture is from my photobucket account. As long as I use the IMG-tagged url that photobucket provides, there is absolutely no problem. ???

      Issues...

This evening, I had issues with uploading from my photobucket.
Under Share URL http://smp.photobucket did not work
      and then
URL Link http://img.photobucket did not work
Last linke that did work was:
finally worked which is not the one(s) that I have used before.
But then it said that I had 5 images uploaded when I only had 3 so only 3 populated into the actual post (which is fine, really), but confusing and frustrating for a brief moment.
      Lurker.

Is that Eagle, AK? Big rock bluff looks familiar.

Not Eagle, no. I took this pic myself, returning to Ruby after a solo hunt. That is Ruby rock. I am headed upriver in this one, in a 19 ft grumman square stern w/9.5 hp outboard.

It's Martentrapper canoe, he let me use it.
