  • Boaters: Are you Rescue Ready?

Four main points to consider (among many):

    1. Everyone wear a life jacket in an open boat or on deck regardless of swimming ability, strength or boating experience
    2. Carry emergency communication and distress signaling devices on your person
3, Attach an engine cut-off device (power boaters)
    4. Have a means of re-boarding and practice in a safe environment
    5. File a float plan, at PledgeToLive.org you can file an electronic float plan, that will send an automatic notification if you do not close it out.
    6. Check the weather, and check it again. PledgeToLive.org has NOAA Marine weather, tide tables, harbor cams.
    7. Take a class, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, U.S. Power Squadrons, Alaska Office of Boating Safety (free), Alaska Marine Safety Education Association offer courses and the Alaska Office of Boating Safety can offer in-water pool cold water survival classes (even in a heated pool!) through agencies or groups. Have a wonderful safe and enjoyable boating season.
