    An easy one for Sunday:

In this photo of a Vz24 Mauser. What is the purpose of the round metal indented gizmo imbedded in the stock?

reinforce recoil lug area. If I remember right that is kinda a square steel crossbolt that takes the place of the wood recoil lug.

That is right. It is just one end of the steel recoil cross bolt.

Why do many Mauser military rifles have the disc on one side that have a funnel shaped indent? There is actually a specific purpose for the dished out area.

Field stripping the firing pin/bolt assembly?

          CORRECT.

It is designed so the rifleman can depress the firing pin into to detent and not launch the thing into his groin, during disassembly.
