After loading and shooting some full bore loads for the 45/70 I was looking at max loads for my 458 Socom. For the 405gr jacketed bullet, it was exactly the same as the max load for 45/70. 48gr of IMR3031 in either one. I think this almost = same velocity, except my guide gun is only 18" barrel. Recoil from 458 Socom is much less. Anyone else loading this caliber? Makes me want to get rid of 45/70 if I can get same ballistics from semiauto.

I am loading this one and the reasons you outlined in the 45-70 qualities is why I went with the 458 Socom. I have not shot it yet as I am recovering from shoulder surgery (unrelated to this or any other caliber) still and will give it a go in the next 2 weeks along with chrony set up to verify the loads.
Cheers,
Matt

Interesting! Is the diameter the same so the hardcast can be loaded in the Socom?Andy
