  • Comments due January 21 on NPR-A Integrated Activity Plan (Teshekpuk, Colville areas)

Comments are due on January 21 for BLM's National Petroleum Reserve Alaska Integrated Activity Plan/Environmental Impact Statement.

The Activity Plan was updated most recently in 2013, but the Secretary of the Interior ordered a review/update to the plan with the intention to open more of the areas closed to exploration under the 2013 plan. The 2013 plan was carefully workshopped with environmental and conservation groups, so it is strange that an update is being pushed forward now, just 6 years later.

Alternatives in the new plan would remove the Colville River Special Area designation and allow for pipeline corridors through the Teshekpuk Lake closed area. Even the supposed "no-action" alternative would allow for new oil leases within the protected areas to be grandfathered in.

A public meeting was held on the topic in Fairbanks recently, see a summary in the New Miner article here.

The EIS/IAP and the website to submit comments is found here.

Please, if you have interest in this area or in Alaska's wild lands in general, consider submitting a comment.
