There is a new proposed commercial shrimping season for Prince William Sound - Do you think the sound can support such a season without impact to the sportsman that also use the resource.

How stupid is it to be wasting tons of salmon and halibut as bycatch in the Bering Sea and then have the coastal villages hollaring they have no food? It's got to stop!Tags: None

Every use of a resource affects another group. According to F&G, however, there is a harvestable surplus. As such, it bears looking into whether or not that surplus can be used to support Alaska's economy if it can be done in a sustainable manner while still providing recreational shrimping opportunity.

Here's why I support commercial fishing if done in a sustainable manner:
-Liscence fees are high enough to fund management of the resource
-Most management of sport fisheries in this state is done from research from taxes on commercial fishermen
-The largest private employment sector in the state is fishing
-Sustainable Commercial Fishing provides a sustainable source of protein for the world, something which is sorely needed
As far as the impact on PU fishermen, yes there will be impacts but it will be way less of an impact than that freaking tunnel to whittier. Comm Shrimpers use essentially the same gear as PU shrimpers, sure the pots are a little bigger and they can use more pots but there are limits (unlike the PU fishery) for catches, and a fishery like this will provide valuable information on the resource something the PU fishery provides very little. With more information managers can better manage the fisheries and better protect the resource.I choose to fly fish, not because its easy, but because its hard.

I'd suggest you look at the department of fish and game comments on the proposals for the commercial pot season. They were unable to manage the fishery and it was soon closed because of overfishing by the commercial folks. We don't want that to happen again do we??
I'd like to see where you get your facts concerning the employment in commercial fishing and monies for management all coming from commercial license fees. It would be interesting to know.
