  • Gulf of Alaska 2012 chinook catch by area

I am not sure if anyone has seen this but the genetic sampling of the Gulf of Alaska 2012 pollock trawl fishery results are out. So the fishery took 18,845 chinook. The breakdown is as follows: Russia 3 fish, Coastal West Alaska 106, Upper Yukon 9, Middle Yukon 5, Cooper River 18, NE Gulf of Alaska 94, NW Gulf of Alaska 385, Coastal SE 3536. BC 9450, and West Coast 5229.

So much for blaming the trawl fishery for Cook Inlet issues or other areas of Alaska except maybe SE for the decline.

Should be interesting to see how BC and West Coast people respond to this. The catch at 18,845 is so low it is hard to fathom how one could measure the impact in-river for most systems.

2013 preliminary results show the same pattern.

It would be really interesting to see if these boats are taking 3-4 at a time or hitting big schools and killing 100+. We also need to consider what the other countries fleets may be taking.

Where can we get a copy of this report? What rivers are NE Gulf and NW Gulf, and Coastal SE. We are getting fin clipped king in Cook Inlet right now that are 10 to 20 pounds.

It was a slide presentation but I am sure a full report is available. The title was Extension of the genetic stock composition to the chinook salmon bycatch in the Gulf of Alaska Walleye Pollock fisheries 2012. Bill Templin at ADF&G Anchorage was an author and so you should be able to contact him and get a copy. Also Jeff Guyon from Auke Bay Lab in Juneau.
