    Mushing Magazine

    Hi,
    I am in the prosess of moving north. (Waiting on some houses to get sold here first!)
    I am trying to learn all I can about mushing while I wait for the move to happen.
    I have been reading this forum alot and doing a lot of online research.
    The question I bring here is this:

    Is Mushing Magazine the magazine you all recomend?

    I am not into raceing, just wanting to get into it for hunting and trapping and the fun. I LOVE dogs!

    This is somthing I always wanted to do since I was a kid growing up in Michigan. But like most, life got in my way. Well, the kids are grown and gone and now it is time for old dad to head out!

    I have a lead on a couple Norwg. Elk (Elg) Hounds I may buy to bring up with me. Anyone using them? They seem like great dogs.

    Any advise would be appreciated.

    It's a good magazine and will give you a place to start. I don't recomend getting dogs in the lower 48 unless they are already sled dogs down there. Alaskan Huskies would be cheaper to keep, as they are smaller, though you can get big ones, so cheaper to feed. They are already used to our weather, etc. Where do you plan on moving? There is a huge difference between the Anchorage area and the Fairbanks area. You can join the Second Chance League which is a sled dog rescue and have half your training done (or more) already. http://members.petfinder.org/~AK17/index.php

    You can sign up for their emails (on the right handed menu bar) and they will send you an update each time they take a team of dogs out. They evaluate each dog's ability, strengths, weakness, etc.

      I have been looking at land in the Tok area. Up to Dot Lake and over to the 40 mile area like Chicken. I have found a few places I like, but I can't do much till I get these houses sold. The market is almost dead here for houses now.

      I here there are a lot of mushers in the Tok area. Is this a good area? I would guess it is. Anyone in that area you could hook me up with?

        Oh I'm in love with that area. You might also want to explore Eagle.

        I have a friend in Tok. Her name is Donna Blasor-Bernhardt. She's the author of Waltz With Me, Alaska and owns a B&B there called Winter Cabin. Look her up online. She's a fascinating lady. She's not a musher but probably knows all her local ones. Tok is a mushing area.

        I know Wayne Hall in Eagle. You can look him up online as well. I think he sells Huskies occasionally too.

        Two Rivers is an area about 25 miles outside of Fairbanks that is the dog mushing center around here. It's not quite as remote as Chicken and Eagle but it's really a great community.

          I have been looking in Eagle also.

          I looked at Two Rivers. That is where Muzzy's Place is if I remember right.
          Is that the area you are in? It looks like a nice place too.
          I would be interested in finding a place like Muzzy's, maybe work for them for a while, get to know the ropes.

            Yep that's where Muzzys Place is. http://www.muzzysplace.net/ You can contact Jan as she is always looking for new handlers. She has two right now but only until the summer when one of them will be going to run tours on the glacier. I think the other one also has plans for this summer.

                1stimestar is right. One of my handlers is going to work on the glacier for a few months and the other will be going to another job. I'll be looking for someone for the summer (possibly longer) starting in April....

                Tok, Eagle, Two Rivers, are all great places to land... good luck to you.

                    Thanks for the invite!
                    If I can make it up that way by summer, I might just have to give you a holler.
                    I am making a major push with my realtor to get this house sold by late spring.
                    We will see if it works!

                      This is kinda funny, I am set up working at the Cincinnati Hunting and Fishing show this week. Well, the funny part is there is a Guide set up 2 boths down from me and he guides just north east of Two Rivers!
                      I will have to catch his name tonight and see if you all know him.
