  • Flight lessons

    Hi all,

I made the jump and am up to about 10 hours of flight lessons so far. I wish I had discovered this 30 years ago.

I'm taking the lessons from Arctic Flyers and I'm extremely pleased.
    Two instructors, Heidi and Rick.
Very knowledgeable and more importantly, good at teaching.

The only downside is having to fly from Cordova to Anchorage, sigh.

Would have been affordable then! I haven't flown for awhile since I can't afford the rental fees. I WAS paying $80-90 hr to rent. Can't do it at $150 +.

I have always wanted to take lessons, but doubt I will now with the cost of all involved with flying now days.

Heidi Ruess is a class act. You made the right choice.

I really would like to learn in Palmer as I am right there but the prices I have found are substantially higher than Arctic Flyers so I will probably bite the bullet and drive in/out of town to learn. I have never heard anything negative about Heidi so unless I find a great/reasonable local CFI I will probably go that route.

That is an understatement. She and Rick are both absolutely wonderful. God, she makes it look so easy. I have my wife wanting to do lessons next. I see a plane in our future.

Have you checked with Jay Baldwin out in the valley?
I think that Heidi is so affordable because, like me, she does it for the love of the game. Of course the overhead these days is a real killer.

I wonder where the lake hood practice area is? Transit time to/from goose bay killed me when I learned at Merrill. Get out of Anchorage, cross the inlet, get out of Anchorage C- My log would show 1.5 but one hour of that was worthless straight and level.

thanks Roger, I can't seem to get to the link from here but it may just be a problem with my overseas internet connection.

On floats, a lot of it takes place around Figure Eight Lake.

Roger Behymer in Cordova is a current certified flight instructor. He has lived there all his life. I don't know if there is an airplane there that you could rent or use, but it might be worth checking out. Roger is a hightime float/wheels pilot and a soft-spoken nice guy.

I am just getting started with getting my pilot license and had gone with Rick Ruess. He was great. Showed me a lot of things, which I need to study more on before taking more lessons.
I Had asked others on who was a good instructor and they lead me his way.
