  • SAFETY TIP. Float- Rudder bar installation.

A friend of mine from this site recently had his souped up C-172 put back on floats.

Everything looked OK before we crawled in and tried to sail and steer her around with some moderate winds. Then we had the big surprise that the rudder was not giving us full movement. The pedals seemed to be moving far enough, but in fact the actual rudder movement was pretty limited.

    Why...
Because the rudder bar itself had the mounting holes drilled off-center. A quick look at the paint around the mounting area revealed that it was previously mounted so the bar was further away from the limit stops.
BUT ... The guys who mounted the floats this year simply had the bar flipped over,,, so now it was much closer to the stops and hit them long before it should have.

This photo shows the rudder bar hitting the stops AFTER we screwed in the stops far enough to get back to the dock. Even then the rudder movement is only 60% of what it should be...

Which makes for Mr Toad' Wild Ride when starting a take-off run with the nose up in the air...

Fortunately the owner is a very good stick with that plane, so we were able to avoid hitting large and expensive objects.

Any good mechanic will tell you, Just because you hired them to install your floats, the final inspection and proper maintenance is really up to you...

Looks as though someone might want to have a look at rusted and/or corroded elements there . . . . . or am I misreading the photos?
