    'My Fellow 'Paloozers'!'

    It's never too early to start planning, pick some seasoned, gourmet chef brains and perhaps help some others in planning their menus for a camping gtg.

    A group of fishing enthusiasts, fraternizing riverside while camping, fishing, story-telling, enjoying life and nature while alternating 'designated adult' and fire patrol responsibilities, not to mention - satiating all the hungry appetites!!

    OK - I'll start... I'm putting CLAM SOUP on the menu...
    As for a recipe, um, uh. . . .

    Any other suggestions?

    Dan - how about that Dutch oven (I need to scan my brain files for some Dutch oven goodies from previous camping trips!)

    I know at least one day, probably 2 days my dinner menu will consists of a liquid diet. Don't worry DOC, I will get my vegetables. Celery and tomato juice for my bloody bulls. I make a 2 gallon pitcher. yummmyyy.

        When ever we go camping, my family always tries to make hobo dinners for one of the meals. Its easy and requires little to no clean up and its a great meal after a long day of fishing.

        All you need is:
        -ground meat (preferably moose)
        -sliced potato
        -sliced onion and other vairous vegis (like carrots, bell peper, etc)
        -some butter
        -seasoning of your choice
        -tin foil

        Make paties out of the ground meat and place it in the tin foil, add some veggis, a little butter and your favorite seasonings (Ilike to use a bunch of garlic salt) wrap it all up and throw it in the fire. We will usually throw a couple of charcol brequetts on the fire to help with the cooking.

          Hobo stew is very yummy. I never really plan a dinner for each night. I carry steaks, dogs, brats, chops, burgers, ribs. It all depends on what I feel like eating after a day on the water. I do know I have never starved nor will I.

            We have the cast iron sandwich makers and make what we call Hobo pies.

            2 pcs Bread and filling.

            for the fillings we make it simple.

            Ham & Cheese
            Pepperoni Cheese & Pizza Sauce
            Desert we use Biscuits & pie filling

            Super easy and you can use just about anything for a filling.


            Oh and Chuck I always have plenty of Ribeyes myself. Can't beat a good Steak, Baked Potato, and Corn on the Cob on an open fire by the river.

              Food? You mean we eat at the palooza?

              LOL! Actually, food is mostly a night thing. Breakfast is Baileys and Coffee and a beer or two prior to and during launch of the boats. Beer and snacks during the day and then beer after the recovery of the boats. After a warm fire and a beverage or two it's cook what we got and plan for tomorrow!

              A woman's touch would be kinda nice though! Glad my wife isn't whatching me type this! LOL!

                reminds me of hunt camp... if the wife know we could cook she would make us... and you know eating taters and sausage every night???? or stew every night at camp.. no problem... so how come we can not eat the same thing at home every meal LOL>>>

                  Hot links! The hotter, the better! Oh... bring two ply TP also! It sure can get rough fishing all day and then having to make some "private breaks" when you only have one ply after the hot links!

The biggest issue will be how many mouths are to be fed. I see lots of names on the list, but not sure who will be there during what time. Perhaps it will vary as people come in for a few days, then leave, others join, etc.. Not sure how many will be there at one time. This will be an issue on dutch oven cooking. Big difference in cooking for 6 and 16. I have a 10" and 12" oven, but I am usually only cooking for 4-6. Anyone have an idea of how many will be there at the same time, shoot me a pm.

                    Among my favorite float trip meals is grayling gumbo and garlic biscuits. We take the Zatarains dried gumbo mix (in box) and cook it about half done, then add grayling slivers to it. Any other fish would work, but you would not have the same cool name. After about 20 minutes, it flakes into pieces and becomes infused with the flavors of the gumbo mix. While this is going, we make garlic biscuits in the dutch oven.

                    Another meal we always prepare on float trips is chilli with jalepeno cornbread. Chilli in a big pot cooking slow. Cornbread must be Jiffy for a southern boy, but Crusteaz will do. I take dehyrdated jalepenos and rehydrate around dinner time, mince them up a bit, and add to the cornbread batter. Cook in dutch oven while the chilli continues to cook. Awesome meal and the cornbread compliments the chilli well.

                    For deserts, my newest favorite in a dutch oven is pineapple upside down cake. This also makes a great breakfast if you can find anyone willing to get up an hour before everyone else.

                        I find it funny that you stated this considering Jiffy mix is made in Michigan. But then again I guess that is south of Alaska.:rolleyes:

                          take pre-made saffron sauce - eat with freshly caught fish

                          Premake this saffron sauce, pour it into appropriate meal-sized tupperwares and let it harden back up.

                          After catching fish, just pan fry them with salt pepper and oil or butter, then in a small pan reheat the saffron sauce to be a liquid again. Pour on top and eat. Piece of cake to make in the field and twice as yummy.

                          Practice the sauce once first for an at home meal because the many step process to make it is tricky.

                              Glad I asked you - you reminded me about a great dutch oven book I lent to a friend who's 'up there' in the scouting heirarchy in SoCal...
                              Time to re-call that publication!

                              Yes, the dutch oven is a classic in camping with all the potential uses.

                              I'm thinking as time draws nearer and plans solidify, Chuck can sort of 'plot out' the head counts for the various times... and we go from there.

                              Sounds delicious - might just try it 'at home' as you suggested.
                              I love saffron! I think it is the most expensive seasoning - by weight, btw...
