  • Dutch Oven Cooking Recipes

I am wanting to start cooking outside in a dutch oven, now that summer is here. If you have any recipes to share, that would be great!

My husband made a Dutch Oven meal for us last night while we were on the Gulkana River.
He used that same website mentioned above. It's googled under Byron's Dutch Oven Recipes.

Sliced fresh apples with some butter, brown sugar, cinnamon. Sprinkle granola and dried fruit on top.

Years ago I was a Boy Scout leader and planned several fishing trips per year for the boys. Seems that the campouts attended by my wife were heavily attended because she usually did the cooking for the adults. My wife was known as the “Dutch Oven Queen”.
Here are two of her recipes:

              TAMALE PIE

1#- ground meat (we preferred venison). 2- 16oz cans kidney beans
1 can whole kernel corn. 1 can ROTEL tomato & chilis
1 packet of taco seasoning. 1 package corn muffin mix
Milk (amount per corn muffin directions – she used powdered for convenience)

Brown meat in large dutch oven and drain. Add beans & corn (drain liquid off both). Stir in taco seasoning & ROTEL. Stir well. Mix muffins according to package. Pour muffin mix over meat mix.
Cover oven. Put over coals (charcoal works best, but we have used wood). Place some coals on the lid. Need more coals on lid than below oven. Cook (about 15 to 30 minutes depending on temp of coals)
EAT!!! Her recipe was proportioned to feed 6 people / servings, but we were lucky to feed 4 because everyone liked it so much. NEVER had to worry about leftovers.

              COBBLER
(Line oven w/ aluminum foil to ease cleaning)
2 cans pie filling (our favorite was cherries). I box cake mix (for cherries we used chocolate)
Milk (about 2/3 of what the cake mix calls for- again we used powdered)
Pour fruit into oven. Prep cake mix using reduced amount of milk.
Pour cake batter over fruit mix.
Cover and cook just like in recipe above. AGAIN- NEVER any leftovers!

She has several cook books that are specific for dutch ovens. If interested, let me know & I will forward you the titles.
