  • Apple trees

I need to pick up a few apple trees. Can I put them in the ground as soon as the ground thaws?

Any good places to pick up apple trees in Anchorage/Valley area?

    Thanks

Yes, you should be able to place them as soon as the ground thaws. They usually work best on south facing slopes.
Just make sure they are clean and in good shape (no spired web looking stuff). I think there are several nerserys in the valley that have trees that have been thru alaskan winters. They tend to be more likely to make it thru the winter but you will probably pay twice as much for them.

Phish, crab apples do well up here and midget varieties of other do well too. Make sure that after you plant, wait a week before doing a fertilizer spike of any kind... and put irish spring on a string on them. The moose love to eat them.

Costco actually had a bunch of midget hybred apple trees, and cherry trees which is odd since I have never seen any cherry trees in Alaska growing. Bells may have some soon and they are usually better then other places. But most of the apple trees I have had up here do well.

I have always heard that you are not supposed to get dwarf trees in alaska. Most trees are dwarfed by the short season.

I picked up 4 trees yesterday. I'll be dropping a couple in behind the fence and a couple in the side yard. Hopefully, the moose won't knock down my fence.

Thanks Chuck for the PM on the trees!

                  Moose

Yes, keep the moose from eating them, and good luck on that.

The only way to prevent the moose from eating them is covering them. Moose are not as big problem in the summer so you can uncover them in the summer then put the covers back in the fall.
                    General tips
Plant the with good southern exposure preferably on a shallow southfacing slope.
When you plant the make an earth bearm around the plant to hold water.
Use a mild fertilizer or manuer, we generally used rabbit.

I planted 4 apple trees and they started blooming right away. Thanks to Chuck for the head's up on Costco (Dimond) having trees. I hit frost at about 7" and had to work through it with a metal bar. After planting and switching the soil out, I think it's going well.

I put 3 trees behind a fence and 1 in the side yard. Hopefully, my fence will still be there after apple season.
