    I would say the discouragement and comment about smell was biased and ignorant. DEC is not in the composting toilet business, and as such I wouldn't expect them to have a clue about them (unless the individual just happened to own one personally, in which case I don't think you would get that comment). While I don't own one myself, I know/have known several folks who do, and who have had them for years. I've learned that, definitely, not all composters are created equal. Some of the folks I know have gone through more than one brand/model until finding one that actually works well here in our climate. Certainly, you will want to do some serious research before investing in one. The best advice I could give is to seek out and talk to several different people who live with and use composters full time, and compile their recommendations before purchasing. Under no circumstances would I buy one based on advertising of any kind.
